Exhibition 1981 To be included in the "Catalogo Razonado" being prepared by Alfonso de la Torre In this work of "Orilla del atardecer V" we see how he feels again the need for color as in the Boston years, based on his same technique and method, he begins to look at nature as a subject and also as a pretext. In 1967 Zóbel had already created his Abstract Museum of Cuenca, and it is here, in this landscape of Jucar where the artist looks. The landscape is imaginary, sifted again and again until it becomes an idea, a memory of it, where a climate is established, an unreal space, both the painter and the spectator can find their own sensation. Born into one of the most influential families in the Philippines, the Zóbel de Ayala family, he devoted himself primarily to abstract painting. He graduated from Harvard. In 1942 he began painting his first exhibition in Boston in 1951, and in 1952 he did it in Manila, his first influences were photography and the American painter Mark Rothko. In 1955 he returned to Spain that he had known in his childhood and meets the avant-garde artists of the moment, Luis Feito, Antonio Lorenzo, Gerardo Rueda, Manolo Millares and Antonio Saura ........., although he still lives in the Philippines, where the University Santo Tomás de Manila grants him a doctorate "Honoris Causa". From the "60s" an evolution begins as an abstract painter developing a characteristic style, in which Chinese calligraphy undoubtedly represents one of the most obvious influences. Although Zóbel's paintings are simple and spontaneous in appearance, they are created from a munucious study and perfect planning. In 1966 he founded the "Spanish Abstract Museum" in the hanging houses of Cuenca together with the artists of the Cuenca group. His life as a painter was a continuous search for order and balance that are projected directly on his painting. We are facing an abstract painter, but with some studies, a technique, some precedents and some materials that make him conceive and perform the work in a classical way. He was a great cartoonist, with a loose and fast stroke with an unusual synthesis ability. His style is avocative and direct, which sometimes does not let us see the work of intellectual development behind his work.
