Jordi, artistic name of Jordi Mercadé, one of the most unique Catalan painters of the 20th century disappears, artistically and humanly. Son of the also painter and goldsmith Jaume Mercadé (1887-1967), he was born in Barcelona in 1923 and trained in the workshop of Ramon Rogent, where he met Joan Ponç, who introduced him to avant-garde movements. Initially Cezannian and Cubist in concept and construction, his painting evolved into an abstraction of strong calligraphic gesture, full of passion and energy that over the years was mitigated, even maintaining an expressionist imprint.
But Jordi was more than a painter, he was someone who lived his time intensely, with passion and bohemianism: in 1946, and together with Arnau Puig, Brossa, Ponç, Boadella and Tormo, he created the renovating magazine Algol; in 1948 he was a promoter of the Saló d'Octubre and settled in Paris, where he lived until 1954, a grant from the French Government; On his return to Barcelona he exhibited at the Syra Gallery and participated with Aleu, Guinovart, Cuixart, Muixart, Tharrats and Tàpies in the foundation of the ephemeral group Taüll, the only (photographic) moment in which the most outstanding figures of Catalan abstraction coincided . From then on he made multiple solo and group exhibitions in Barcelona, Madrid, Zaragoza, Milan, Bern, etc., promoted the Saló de Maig and represented Spain in the Biennales of São Paulo, Alexandria and in the Parisian salons "des jeunes peintres" , "nationale des Beaux Arts" and "indépendents", a dynamism that still manifested itself in the eighties, when together with JJ Tharrats, he supported the birth of the Associació Catalana d'Artistes Plàstics. His last public appearance as an artist was in 1999 with the exhibition La pintura com a hipòtesi d'existència, curated by Assumpta Rosés, which through 80 paintings offered a retrospective of his career and was presented at the Center d'Art Santa Monica of Barcelona and the Museu de Valls, for the paternal bonds that united her to this population of the Alt Camp.
