About the Item

A wonderful work by the elusive Salvadoran Mauricio Aguilar which is sculptural as well as pictorial. As I hope the video will show, the artwork offers new perpectives when viewed from the side. With impressive impasto, it is a rich and satisfying work of which it is impossible to tire. It appears light as a cloud one moment, strong as a rock the next. Certainly the subtle and poetic palette has also something to do with it. As wrote Cuban art critic José Gómez Sicre about Aguilar and his work in 1965: Secluded in a workshop located in one of the most beautiful places in these volcanic lands, enemy of its brutal light, he had the windows covered with black cloth, and even the most insignificant cracks under the doors irritated his retina. He saw the volcanoes and painted them in a uniform purple mass. The contours of the mountains were delimited only by the greater or lesser aridity of the pictorial surface (...) The relationship of space and light is his basic problem (..) He leaves them (objects) in their essence, outlines them in a two-dimensional space, a pure pictorial space, and begins to destroy their contours, to melt them as if by magic, in the light or, if we want to see it that way, he takes them out of the shadows (...)For Aguilar, what matters is that light and space are one. Mauricio Aguilar was born on October 21, 1919, in San Salvador. Very young, he moved with his parents to France, where he was educated. In 1934, he was accepted into Christian Bérard's studio and began to paint. He continued his studies at the Academie Julien. In 1971, he left Paris to return to San Salvador, where he continued painting in his studio at Planes de Renderos. He traveled periodically to Paris and New York, painting continuously, but destroying much of his pictorial work. He had solo shows in San Salvador, Lima, New York and Washington DC. Aguilar participated in the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1967 and was also part of collective exhibitions in the United States and in Mexico. Our painting, dating from circa 1960, is an oil/mixed media on board with think impasto.

Mid Century Textural Color-Field Abstract in Royal Blue-Purple by Peter Witwer A striking mid-century textural color-field abstract in a bold color palette of royal blue-purple by San Francisco artist Peter Witwer (American, 1928-1968). This highly textured mixed media piece, c.1960's, uses a monochromatic palette that is divided into two areas of varying textural depths. The lower part of the canvas verges on sculptural, as the textured surface becomes almost three-dimensional and haunting forms emerge from the abstract purple-blue plane. Unsigned. From a collection of the artist's works. Displayed in a painted wood slate frame. Frame has been painted by the artist and is considered part of the artwork. Linen size: 26"H x 22"W. Framed size: 27"H x 23"W x 1.2"D Unsigned, but was acquired with a collection of the artist's work. Provenance: Without a will and a family that had little interest in his art, nearly all of his possessions and close to 100 paintings were turned over to SF’s Conservators Office. His friend, Albert Richard Lasker, purchased all of Peter’s possessions (including the art) and has taken care of them until this day, always sensing there was something remarkable about the collection. Wanting Peter’s work to finally be seen, Richard came to Lost Art Salon with Peter’s story after reading about the new gallery in a July, 2005 issue of the SF Chronicle. Born George Peter...
