Erik Scholz
Erik Scholz was a Postwar & Contemporary painter who was born in 1926. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest. He was awarded the prestigious Munkácsy Award in 1950 and received stipends to work and study in Paris later in that decade. Between the 1950s and 80s, his work was shown at the Salon d'Automne, in group exhibitions at the Hall of Art and the Museum Ernst in Budapest, at Art Basel in Switzerland, at the Kunsthalle Tübingen in Germany and the Academy of Fine Art in Vienna, Austria. Scholz withdrew in 1987 to the village of Zsennye. He retreated entirely from the art market, as he entered a new creative period which was both personal and singular. Combining wood ash from his stove, and organic materials such as twigs and branches with his paint, he created structures that are near-animate, are both natural and creative.
