About the Item
A bathroom mirror reflects images from the outdoors in this abstract oil by Mel Davis. The Montreal born artist often re-imagines everyday objects in a contemporary way using colour, pattern and form. The palette for this series—grays, muted blue, and black markings is noticeably darker than her usual colourful work. (As a material linen adds durability and texture.) One of a series.

She graduated from Concordia University with a BFA in 1998. A short study trip at the Slade School of Art in London was followed by a move to California where she acquired her MFA at the San Francisco Institute of Art. Davis still lives in the Bay area. Her work has been shown in both solo and group shows in Canada and the U.S.

To great effect, Mel Davis uses colour, shape and patterns to convey emotion in this abstract composition. The palette is dramatic—rich tones of blues, green, orange and burgundy. “My paintings investigate iconic themes in art such as landscape, the portrait, the interior. I am interested in how we as makers and viewers can find endless modes of description and emotional connection in these classical representations.” Mel Davis She was born in Montreal and graduated from Concordia University with a BFA in 1998.
