About the Item
This contemporary abstract painting was inspired by nature.
A gifted abstract artist with an impressive portfolio, Sandra Goldie’s first series of oil paintings evoke the serenity found in the beauty of nature. The Canadian artist begins each piece by creating a backdrop on the bare canvas with sienna or ‘terre verte’ (green earth) colours. Expressive brushstrokes and calligraphic markings—layered forms in muted hues that hint at the shape of leaves, flowers, petals and vines ‘dance’ throughout the space. Goldie’s work is dynamic, a result, she says of her early exposure to the freeform rhythm of jazz music. The colour palette is a rich tapestry of cranberry, green, melon, and white that pops against a golden-yellow backdrop punctuated by black markings.
“… At the beginning of the summer of 2024, there was a lot of distress in the news, none of which I could possibly fix or have any impact on. At the same time, I heard a British gentleman describe his beautiful garden with the words “ Something has to be lovely.” This phrase stuck with me, a garden as a salve in a difficult time. I hope these pictures address that need.” Sandra Goldie
Goldie pursued her dream of painting after a career as an interior designer by completing a BFA and graduating with distinction from Concordia University. While completing her degree, she opened a gallery for emerging artists in Montreal which she successfully grew for nearly a decade. During this time, the gallery participated in numerous art fairs, including Art Toronto. This second career as a gallerist followed her to the County and Oeno Gallery, where she continued to work with exceptional artists, both emerging and established. A decision to pursue a more personal career has put Goldie back in the studio. Her accumulated experiences from both the design world and the art world now influence her painting.
