About the Item

William Perehudoff (1918-2013) is one of the most cherished and collected Canadian abstract painters. His work exemplifies how color field painting was expressed in Canada. Like some of his contemporaries, he was encouraged and guided by legendary New York critic Clement Greenberg. Perehudoff spent several summers at the University of Saskatchewan's legendary Emma Lake Artist's Workshop where he worked and studied with Jules Olitski and Kenneth Noland during the 1960s. Perehudoff is known for his simple and exuberant compositions that juxtapose and celebrate color. His series "La Plonge" is a testament to the artist's expertise as a colorist and his ongoing commitment to and exploration of color-field painting. While most collectors or fans of the artist are familiar with the "La Plonge" series of lithographs, this work is notable as it is a unique gouache on paper...likely a prototype before begining the series of prints. In this work, transparent bands or mink and chocolate brown serves as a backdrop to saturated bands of autumnal hues, including burnt sienna, umber, rust, and terracotta. The bands, suspended in the center of the composition, hover in a commanding alignment. The simplicity of this piece is further accentuated by its flat composition, a definitive characteristic throughout Perehudoff's oeuvre. During his lifetime, Perehudoff was recognized across Canada (and beyond). Today his works can be found in major public collections across the country. Even during his heyday, Perehudoff stayed in Saskatchewan preferring to paint at his family's farm. Questions about this piece? Contact us. Visit our Toronto gallery on Thursdays or by appointment. Harold Town (1924-1990) remains one of the most accomplished and fascinating characters from the "Painters Eleven" group. While Town coined the group's name (based on the number of artists who simply attended their first meeting) his output was diverse, ever-changing and not restricted to painting. Somewhat ironically, Town's first significant body of work, which established his reputation, was a group of monotype - which he called "Single Autographic Prints" Town was introduced to lithography by fellow Painters Eleven member Oscar Cahen...
