About the Item

GEORGE (SMITH) ARMFIELD This is a classic example of George Armfield's paintings with terriers. Picture Size: 10 x 14" (25 x 35cm) Outside Frame Size: 16 x 20" (40 x 50cm) Exhibition Period 1836 – 1875 He was born and worked in London He was a painter of dogs, especially terriers chasing birds, cats of mice. In addition, he painted landscapes, game birds and other wild animals. These he painted mainly in oils, although he was an excellent pencil sketcher and water-colourist. His work is much better than some people thought in his time. In fact, they were often mistaken and sometimes passed off as those that had been painted by Landseer. Also many of his works were sought after by engravers to work with. For example, his paintings ‘Three Against a Fox’, ‘The Country Life’, and ‘For Always’ were engraved by Tomkins, ‘The First Lesson’ was engraved by Bateman and ‘The Experience’ by T. Lucas. His work was, and still is, copied by many other artists and animal painters, but the quality that was Armfield shines out like a beacon. He changed his name from George Armfield Smith to George Armfield in 1840 George had 3 relatives who also painted dogs; Edward Armfield who painted terriers, Emily who also painted terriers in barn and landscape scenes and his brother, William Armfield Smith Exhibited at:- Royal Academy 37 times British Institution 32 times Royal Society of British Artists 43 times Portland Gallery 3 times Dudley gallery 6 times Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham 4 times Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts 8 times Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours twice Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool 8 times Manchester City Art Gallery twice
