About the Item

John Frederick Herring Snr (Surrey 1795-1863 Kent) A black stallion in a landscape Oil on canvas Painting Size - 25 x 33 in Framed Size - 30 x 39 in Provenance The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. John Frederick Herring Sr. (1795–1865) was one of the most celebrated sporting and animal painters of 19th-century England. His name became almost synonymous with the English horse, and his work helped shape how generations have seen the golden age of British country life. Born in London in 1795 to a Dutch-British merchant family, Herring’s early years were far from aristocratic. He moved to Doncaster as a young man, where he worked as a sign painter and coachman. But even while painting the sides of carriages and driving mail coaches, he never stopped sketching horses—his true passion. His skill didn’t go unnoticed, and by the 1820s, he had begun to receive commissions from wealthy patrons, particularly those involved in horse racing. Herring’s reputation grew steadily, and he became especially known for his portraits of racehorses—capturing champions like Phantom, Priam, and Plenipotentiary with a rare mix of accuracy and elegance. These weren’t just stiff profile portraits; he brought energy, movement, and even personality to his animal subjects, placing them in landscapes that felt authentic and often quite beautiful. His work was prized not only for its technical skill but for the way it celebrated the relationship between man, animal, and countryside. In the 1840s, Herring moved to London and his fame increased. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and became a favorite among the aristocracy. Queen Victoria even commissioned work from him—one of the highest honours an artist could receive at the time. Though best known for his horses, he also painted farmyard scenes, livestock, and rural life with a fond, almost nostalgic eye. Herring was part of a remarkable artistic family. His sons—most notably John Frederick Herring Jr.—also became painters, and at times their works are so stylistically similar that they’re occasionally confused. But Herring Sr.’s work stands apart for its blend of vitality, detail, and warmth. He died in 1865, leaving behind a legacy of paintings that not only documented the sporting world of Victorian Britain but celebrated its spirit. Today, his works can be found in museums, stately homes, and private collections across the UK and beyond, admired both for their artistry and their affectionate portrayal of animals, especially the noble horse.
