Sawrey Gilpin was a member of an old Cumberland family who chose a career in sporting painting, at which he was encouraged as a young man by the great Duke of Cumberland who had suppressed the Jacobite rising of 1745. Gilpin, though centred on London, always retained his Northern links, and had as patron many northern sportsman, like the sporting fanatic Colonel Thornton of Thornville Royal for whom he painted numerous pictures. Gilpin has suffered from being under the shadow of his incomparable contemporary George Stubbs, but he emerges as a leading horse and animal painter of a competence which is always reliable and occasionally inspired. He is an important link between the early English School of Wootton, Tillemans and the like, and the later painters exemplified by Ferneley and Herring. He was the president of the Society of Artists in 1773, and was elected RA in 1797. A clubbable man, he was popular with his fellow Royal Academicians. He frequently collaborated with them, adding portraits of favourite animals to numerous pictures by Barret, Walton, Romney, Zoffany, Reinagle and even the young Turner. William Eddowes Turner British, (1836-1904) Mike & Champ Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 23 inches x 28 inches Size including frame: 28 inches x 33 inches A fine sporting painting horse portrait of a bay pony called Mike and a terrier named Champ by William Eddowes Turner. The prize winning horse can be seen standing in a stable next to a Jack Russell terrier dog. Other horses can be seen further along through the stable door. Although the name of Mike’s owner is not known, his initials (HBL) can be seen on the blanket on the stable floor. The owner most likely commissioned Turner to paint this portrait to celebrate horse’s career. Another portrait was also commissioned by the owner around the same period of a white hunter called ‘The Peeler’ with another terrier. ARTIST'S STATEMENT Creating is an addiction. With all the highs and lows you would expect. I am interested in the surface textures and creating paintings that portray them in realistic detail. Hopefully a viewer will feel they can run a hand over the feathers and moss, or grasp an object in the painting. This detail is usually composed in an abstract design. The design can occur naturally or be arranged by me. The subjects of my paintings are usually based on the patterns and textures of nature and human interaction with nature. I have found subjects to paint in remote wilderness areas of the world, local parking lots, and my own backyard. I paint the way I explore the rugged mountains by my house, always pushing to see what is over the next hill, searching for the unexpected. I begin my paintings without a plan. No preliminary sketches are made; every thought is worked out directly on the canvas. Artifacts of the creative process can be seen in the rich textures, worked surfaces, and veiled light qualities created by working and reworking the piece. As one image comes into focus another is fading away, retaining a piece of the previous while hinting at what might come next. The result of my search...
