Adams was born on a farm in rural Indiana near Muncie. His father, a horse farmer and amateur artist, encouraged the younger Adams’ interest in art. At age twenty-one, Adams moved to Indianapolis to attend the John Herron Art Institute. There, he began to paint portraits.
He took two trips to Europe, the first in 1910 when he traveled to Italy with William Merritt Chase. Two years later, he accompanied Robert Henri to Spain where he met fellow artist Margaret Boroughs, whom he married six years later. In 1914, Adams painted a series of portraits for the city hospital in Indianapolis. He was to paint children whose families had been in the United States for generations and also children of immigrants to represent the various nationalities of which the city was composed. It was considered to be one of the most ambitious public art projects in Indiana’s history. Originally, twenty-four portraits were to be done; while some are now missing, they were all initially installed in the pediatric ward of the hospital.

DETAIL: Artist in oil, watercolour and stained glass and teacher, born Manchester, full name George Osmund Caine. Studied at Birmingham College of Art, 1930–7, and in Italy, 1938. Served in the Military Police during World War II. Gained an honours degree in medieval and modern history and studied singing at Guildhall School once he had begun teaching, singing lieder and choral works on the radio and in concerts. He taught, 1945-76, including principal lectureship in graphic design at Twickenham College of Technology. Caine was a forceful, unconventional teacher who developed a successful, broad-based vocational course embracing illustration, exhibition and graphic design, typography and photography. In 1966 he made two films: The Ruskin Country, and, with his wife Mary, The Glastonbury Giants.
Her associated book, The Glastonbury Zodiac: key to the mysteries of Britain, appeared in 1978. Took part in numerous mixed exhibitions, including NEAC, RBSA and RA, and had many solo shows in Britain and France, later ones including Duncan Campbell Fine Art, 1986, Galerie Salammbo, Paris, 1987, and retrospective at Orleans House Gallery, Twickenham, 1998. English hill figures, British castles, monumental effigies, Kew Gardens and France were notable themes in his work. A voluptuous woman lies prone on a divan, bearing her backside and turning her head flirtatiously to the viewer, though averting her eyes slightly, as if to maintain a coy demeanor. Surrounded by lush fabrics of deep blues, the creamy tones of her skin and dressing gown are thrown in sharp contrast, making the figure glow luminously. The whole painting is ordered by folds - of flesh, of fabric, of cushions, of the rug - inviting the viewer's eye to look closely across the topography of the canvas.
One of Boucher's cabinet paintings (that is, paintings made for private collectors rather than official exhibition at the Salon), the open eroticism of this work invites a voyeuristic gaze. Although it was created for a private audience, it was later displayed at the Salon of 1767, where the critic Denis Diderot found it shocking and lascivious. Nonetheless, Boucher would later paint another iteration of this reclining pose, this time using Marie-Louise O'Murphy, a favorite mistress of King Louis XV, as his model, suggesting that the provocative composition was a stock figure for Boucher's private commissions.
"The Brunette Odalisque" (French: L'Odalisque or l'Odalisque brune) is a painting of c. 1745 by François Boucher, now in the Louvre in Paris. He later produced two other works in the odalisque genre, both known as "The Blonde Odalisque".
The present painting is another version of Bouchers painting which differs in minor details. The quality of the paint is very fine and the whole technique and style allows a dating to c. 1750. As Boucher's Painting was very famous there were several copies and versions which were made by his studio. The present painting can be attributed to the close circle of Boucher.
The Painting is framed in a golden frame which was built in the Rococo style in c. 1990.
Both the title of Boucher's painting and the objects found in the interior fix the subject as an odalisque, a concubine within the harem of the Ottoman sultan. The sumptuous textiles and exotic, decorative objects suggest early traces of Orientalism, although the figure appears European. Odalisque paintings...
