Jordi Curos Art

Spanish, 1930-2017
Jordi Curós Ventura (Olot, Girona, March 4, 1930) is a Spanish painter. He trained at the Olot School of Arts and Crafts, a center of great artistic tradition. His first individual exhibition was held in the Garden of Barcelona galleries in 1950. In 1951, he began his participation in the October Salons of Barcelona. Among the Catalan artists that emerged from this important demonstration, Curós stood out, from the beginning, for his pictorial faculties and personality. Between 1958 and 1963 his painting goes through a stage of abstract tendency, with colorful arabesques and paintings with enamel qualities. Later, he will assume a figurative style characterized by the importance of light and the interest in instant capture. He belonged to the Parés room group, where he exhibited successive times between 1965 and 1989. His work is perfectly recognized, from the first stage, figurative, contemporary to the aforementioned Halls, of masses of colors clearly delimited by a marked drawing, until the current form, back to the representation, of more nuanced color, going through its stage informalist, in that his basal paintings, forming a kind of ovals, were recognized by their personal concept. In his informal era, he is attracted, by the material possibilities, by performing large-scale works, also the use of bright enamels that "turn his painting into a continuous exaltation of the textural-chromatic factor", according to Lourdes Cirlot. Carlos Areán, affirms that his painting "has evolved from a traditional figurativism of wide planes, marked volumes and solid structure, towards a technically studied use of the most varied new materials, with the consequent suppression of any objective pretext ". The influence of Informalism gives way to images taken of the natural in marine environments and markets full of flowers and fruits. The colors are piled in successive layers that overlap even on plaster to give the canvas textures of a great boldness. Figures and colors almost Fauve coexist in it with abstract pieces that allow to enjoy a different and absolutely personal vision of life. He personally exhibited in Barcelona: Sala Caralt (1952/53); Galleries Layetanas (1953); Syra Galleries (1954-55); Vayreda Hall (1956-59). In Madrid, his presentation took effect in 1953, in Biosca Galleries. He also did it individually at the Mendoza Galleries in Caracas. In 1952 he was selected by Eugenio d'Ors to appear in the X Hall of the Eleven and in 1953 he participated in the II Hispano-American Biennial of Havana, appearing in large groups such as the III Spanish-American Biennial, Space and Color in the Spanish Painting today (Rio de Janeiro, 1959 and Montevideo, 1960). Current Catalan painting (Lisbon and Porto, 1960) or Figure, informal tribute to Diego Velázquez (1960); Contrasts in the current Spanish painting (Brussels, 1961); 3rd Granollers Prize for Painting, High-tapestry Tapestries, Contemporary Artists Tapestries (Biosca Galleries, 1961), May Room, Independence Hall. Gaudí of two scholarships, awarded in 1954, the first by the French Institute of Barcelona, to move to Paris.

Spanish Modernist Portrait of a Woman with Guitar, Catalan Fauvist Interior Artist: Jordi Curós Ventura (Spanish, 1930–2017) Title: Woman with Guitar Date: 1980 Medium: Oil on panel Dimensions: 46 × 38 cm (18.11 × 14.96 in) Framed dimensions: 64 × 56 cm (25.20 × 22.05 in) Signature: Signed and dated lower right Period: Late 20th century Style: Spanish Modernism, Catalan Modern Art, Figurative Expressionism, Fauvist influence Subject: Female portrait, woman, guitar, interior, flowers Condition: Good vintage condition, consistent with age Frame: Framed Description A striking 1980 oil painting by Catalan artist Jordi Curós Ventura, depicting a seated young woman in an intimate interior accompanied by a Spanish guitar and a vase of red flowers. The composition is constructed through large areas of warm, expressive color. The intense coral-orange background establishes an immediate chromatic presence, while the woman's pale yellow jacket, dark violet trousers, blue-green vase and orange guitar create a carefully balanced yet deliberately unconventional palette. Curós simplifies forms without abandoning figuration, giving the painting the visual immediacy associated with postwar European modernism and the coloristic freedom of Fauvism. The sitter occupies the center of the composition, frontal and still, her crossed legs and folded hands producing an almost sculptural stability. Behind her, the guitar introduces an unmistakably Mediterranean and Spanish note, while the vase and small table transform the portrait into an intimate domestic scene. Rather than functioning merely as accessories, these objects divide the composition into chromatic zones and establish a rhythmic dialogue between figure, still life and interior. The painting is signed and dated lower right and retains its substantial period frame. Biography Jordi Curós Ventura (Olot, Girona, 1930–2017) was an important Catalan painter associated with the renewal of Spanish figurative painting during the second half of the 20th century. He trained at the Escola d'Arts i Oficis of Olot, a city with one of Catalonia's most distinguished landscape-painting traditions. His first solo exhibition took place at Galerías Jardín in Barcelona in 1950, and from 1951 he participated in the influential Salons d'Octubre, which played an important role in introducing new artistic languages into postwar Catalan art. Curós exhibited at prominent Barcelona galleries including Sala Caralt, Galerías Layetanas, Galería Syra and Sala Vayreda. His Madrid debut took place at Galerías Biosca in 1953, and he also exhibited internationally. In 1952 he was selected by the influential Catalan intellectual and critic Eugeni d'Ors for the X Salón de los Once. The following year he participated in the II Bienal Hispanoamericana de Arte in Havana. Curós received scholarships that enabled him to work in Paris, first from the Institut Français de Barcelona in 1954 and later from Barcelona City Council in 1958. Contact with the Parisian art world contributed to the development of the increasingly experimental language that characterized his work during the following years. Between approximately 1958 and 1963, his painting moved toward abstraction and Informalism, with strongly textured surfaces, arabesques and enamel-like areas of color. He later returned to figuration, developing a highly personal style characterized by luminous color, simplified forms and an interest in capturing the immediacy of everyday life. From 1965 to 1989 he exhibited repeatedly at Barcelona's historic Sala Parés, one of Spain's oldest and most prestigious commercial galleries. His career also included participation in major exhibitions of contemporary Spanish art in Havana, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo, Lisbon, Porto and Brussels. The Museu d'Art Modern de Barcelona acquired one of his paintings as early as 1953. Today Curós is regarded as a distinctive representative of postwar Catalan painting, occupying a fascinating territory between Mediterranean figuration, Expressionism, abstraction and the legacy of French modernism. Artistic Inspiration and Context This painting belongs to Curós's mature return to figuration after his experiments with abstraction and Informalism. Its saturated palette and simplified construction recall the great colorist tradition of 20th-century European painting, particularly Henri Matisse, Kees van Dongen and Raoul Dufy, while its psychological directness and deliberately economical drawing place it firmly within Spanish and Catalan postwar figurative art. There is also a subtle connection with the intimate interiors of the School of Paris: a solitary figure, ordinary domestic objects and an apparently simple setting transformed through color into something psychologically charged. The guitar is especially significant. Beyond its decorative function, it introduces a distinctly Spanish cultural symbol into an otherwise cosmopolitan modernist composition. Together with the flowers and intensely colored background, it gives the work a warm Mediterranean character highly characteristic of Curós's mature figurative vocabulary. The result is both portrait and interior, combining Spanish identity, Catalan postwar modernism and the chromatic freedom inherited from Fauvism. By Emilio Grau Sala

Located in Madrid, ES

EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 INTERIEUR AUX FLEURS JAUNES signed "Grau Sala" (lower left) signed again, located, dated and titled "Grau Sala, Paris 61, Interieur aux fleurs jaunes" (on the reverse) oil on canvas 15 x 18-1/4 inches (38 x 46 cm.) framed: 23-1/2 x 26-1/2 (59.5 x 67 cm.) PROVENANCE Private Parisian Collection Interieur aux fleurs jaunes This interior with two female figures where also the plans made in different colors are drawing the composition. The abundant pictorial material distributed in geometric portions, gives life to the tablecloth and mother and daughter figures, in black and white colors of the jacket, while the black line takes care of the environments so as not to separate them. The fruit bowl and flowers give a cheerful touch with their pastel tones. Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in "Sala Parés", Barcelona. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents. In the years 1930-33 he had painted under the influence of Cubism, especially that of Torres García. It is from that time a painting of the port of Barcelona, geometric and structural, which completely anticipated what would later be his work. His personality began fully painting watercolors and oils with a certain fantasy character, with a point of decorative instinct and themes full of naivety and grace. Romantic interiors, paddocks, port scenes, sailors, etc. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Mediterranean because his work has the color and light of that land. He understood and assimilated impressionist painting very well, and for that reason he was never subject to the modules of a formulist realism, nor the sexigencias of the forms. In Paris he found the best environment to give us a fruitful and intense work, because he could use the expressive potential of French art to enrich it. All this made him a very esteemed artist everywhere where his work was known. He was also very often required to illustrate books and publications in Paris. Also his posters were very successful. He painted a large number of subjects, but perhaps the theme of horse racing is where you can see in a very clear way the joyful and optimistic life that was lived at that time. In this fabric there is an explosion of juicy and vivid colors full of ingenuity and simplicity in its composition. Only a teacher could turn the complicated into something simple and beautiful. Before this work we feel a deep emotion, the emotion of before starting a horse race. Joy and nervousness at the same time. Especially since it is a direct emotion. There are no intermediaries between our eyes and what the work intends to tell us. This is precisely what seduces and catches us of this painting. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum...
