Edward Atkinson Hornel (Scottish, 1864 – 1933) The lily pond, 1902 Oil on canvas Signed and dated ‘EA Hornel / 1902’ (lower right) 30 x 36 in. (76.2 x 91.3 cm.) Provenance: The Fine Art Society, August 1993 #11778 This is a splendid example of the renowned turn-of-the-century Scottish artist Edward Atkinson Hornel's work. Painted in 1902, this large oil painting showcases Hornel's distinct style characterised by rich colors and dense patterns. The piece portrays three children depicted by a lily pond, rendered in muted blue and grey tones using his signature square brush technique. Hornel drew much inspiration from Japanese art, evident in his work. In 1893, Hornel embarked on a journey to Japan alongside George Henry. Their expedition was financially supported by Alexander Reid, a gallery owner, and philanthropist William Burrell. During their 19-month stay, Hornel created some of his finest oil paintings, skillfully merging his affinity for decorative art with figurative drawing and composition. An exhibition of his Japanese-inspired works in Glasgow met with great success. However, Hornel eventually returned to Kirkcudbright, where he shifted his focus to painting children in elaborate costumes, figures amidst flower-filled woods, autumnal forests and flowers, and girls by the seaside. Throughout the 1890s and early 1900s, Hornel reached the pinnacle of his artistic achievements. There are examples of his works in the museums of Aberdeen, Buffalo, St. Louis, Toronto, Montreal, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester, Hull, Bath, and Liverpool.
