Historique:
L’indigence d’après-guerre et la difficulté inhérente de trouver les matériaux adéquats et/ou habituels, telles les couleurs, très onéreuses alors, ont poussé les artistes figuratifs de l’après-guerre, en corrélation avec les préoccupations de l’époque, à redéfinir les paradigmes de la représentation.
Il n’est plus question de chercher un sens mais bien pour les artistes d'étudier l’objet pour son intérêt formel, sa qualité intrinsèque. Le regard de l’artiste devient analytique et dépeint alors l’objet pour ce qu’il est et non plus pour son pouvoir évocateur ou symbolique.
La nature morte n’est plus une invitation sensuelle à la ripaille, la pomme ou la pêche n’évoque aucune envie de croquer, la cruche aucune ivresse, la volaille aucune agape. L’artifice laisse désormais la place à la forme. Les objets sont posés les uns à côté des autres sans recherche de contexte.
Le trait, bras armé de cette nouvelle figuration, devient alors plus fulgurant, acéré, présent.
Cette génération d’artiste gardera cette analyse formelle, mais la réalité, bien que froidement analysée, sera toujours empreinte d’émerveillement et de fascination. Dès les années 60, avec le retour de la croissance, si les sujets seront toujours traités pour leur valeur primaire, la couleur et la lumière, traitées en plages, en à-plats ou en touches, viennent enrichir le vocabulaire chromatique et sublimer cette apparente âpreté.
Jean Jansem qui illustre parfaitement cette génération nous invite en outre à un voyage unique traversant des univers intemporels, burlesques, mythologiques ou bibliques…. où la comédie humaine côtoie l’Histoire.

Jean Jansem
Jean Jansen is a figure, landscape, marine and genre painter of European subjects: fishermen and children of Greece, bullfighting in Spain, Italian landscapes and markets, scenes of Venice and French France village marketplaces and landscapes. He was born in 1920 in Seuleuze, Asia Minor (Armenia) and spent his childhood in Salonika, Greece. He arrived in France at the age of 11 where he started painting. He took evening courses in the Montparnasse Quarter in Paris, and graduated from the School of Arts Dératifs in 1938. He often visited the atelier of "La Grande Chaumière", and exhibited his first oil painting at the "Salon des Indépendants" in 1939. Since 1951, Jansem has held exhibitions of his work in France (Paris, Amiens, Nantes, Avignon, Marseille, Nancy, Toulouse, Cannes, Mulhouse, Bayonville, Clermont-Ferrand...) and in other countries (Rome, Palermo, Lausanne, New-York, Chicago, Palm-Beach, London, Brussels, Montréal, Tokyo, Osaka, Beirut, Sao Paolo, Johannesburg, Germany, Art Expo New York and Los Angeles.

L’artiste a longuement séjourné à Venise, notamment à Mazzorbo et la lagune a toujours eu une place bien particulière dans l’oeuvre et le coeur de Jansem.
L’artiste y aura réalisé nombre de dessins et une trentaine de toiles seulement, dont chacune, représentation de l’eau et du ciel, est le témoin de l’imprégnation pérenne de la lumière si spécifique de la lagune dans l’oeuvre de l’artiste.
Cette œuvre est une bien belle démonstration de cette utilisation magistrale de la lumière.

1964: c’est l’inauguration du nouveau plafond du Palais Garnier par Marc Chagall commandé par André Malraux alors ministre chargé des affaires culturelles. Commande qui fera couler beaucoup d’encre entre les partisans du modernisme et les tenants du conservatisme. Malraux tiendra bon, si ce n’est une légère concession: pour éviter de détruire l'ancien plafond et son décor, il sera masqué par une toile amovible de quelques 240m2 réalisée par Chagall dans les ateliers des Gobelins puis tendue par-dessus.
Cette commande, autant acte politique que intellectuel, intervient à une époque où Malraux, convaincu que l’art contribue au rayonnement international de la France, soutiendra notamment les commandes du Mobilier national dont Pierre Paulin sera l’une des grandes figures, et où la CGT (Compagnie générale transatlantique) lancera un de ses plus gros chantiers avec le mythique paquebot France...

👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez
José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919. He studied at the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts and began exhibiting in the 1940s. By 1947, he had fully devoted his career to bullfighting scenes, developing a distinctive figurative expressionist style with impressionist influences.
He collaborated with the magazine El Ruedo, creating numerous illustrations and covers, and designed collectible postcards for Editorial Artigas. His work became well-known in Spanish artistic circles and is now part of both private and institutional collections, including the Club Taurino of London.
His paintings have been auctioned internationally, reaching up to $3,000 depending on size and subject. His legacy is that of a painter who masterfully captured the emotion, tradition, and drama of the Spanish corrida.
