About this artist:
Born in Galatz, Romania, John Barber became a modernist painter of figures and scenes of daily life.
He emigrated from Romania with his family to the United States in 1908. His first art instruction came from his grandfather, and from 1909 to 1910, he studied at the National Academy of Design in New York City. However, he thought the teaching was too rigid and was much happier at the Ferrer Center School where he took lessons from Robert Henri. The social realism of Henri had much influence on Barber, and he became a part of Henri's circle devoted to depictions of urban life. By 1916, he was an illustrator for the radical magazine, The Masses.
In 1917, he was drafted and stationed briefly in France, where in 1920, after a short return to New York, he took up residency with his friend, Jules Pascin, and was much influenced by Cubism. Barber studied at Andre L'Hote's School Odessa and learned L'Hote's principles regarding shapes as distinct and animated in space. He focused on portrait and figure studies as geometric patterns spatially related. A trip to Italy caused him to be much impressed and influenced by early Renaissance painters Giotto and Piero della Francesco.
In 1927, he returned to the United States with Pascin and pursued geometric figure painting. He then spent several years in France and Portugal with intermittent returns to New York. The remainder of his life, he went back and forth from Europe to America, even during World War II, and earned an international reputation for his painting of daily life that included satirical scenes of industrial America.
In 1948, he married Dr. Margaret De Ronde, and they traveled extensively in Mexico, Europe, and throughout the United States. He died of leukemia on December 8, 1965.

The Junkman's Serenade oil painting by Gregorio Prestopino
By Gregorio Prestopino
Located in Hudson, NY
This work epitomizes Prestopino's interest in social realism which captures a quiet interlude in the everyday life of an "everyman." It also provides a contrast for our expectations as we view a tough, blue collar worker, with no one watching, as he sings a melody to the birds.
In an original frame measuring 49" x 39" x 3.25"
Provenance: Edith Halpert's Downtown Gallery (label verso from 13 w. 113th street, where the gallery was located from 1926 until 1939)
Private collection, NYC, c. 1935
By descent
About this artist: Born in Little Italy in 1907, Gregorio Prestopino first set out to become a sign painter as the son of New York City immigrants. Instead, his talent provided a life-changing scholarship to the National Academy of Design, and for five years he studied drawing under C. W. Hawthorne. He spent the summer of 1934 at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire. His deep involvement with the colony led him to later serve as its director in 1954.
Much of Prestopino’s work was in the vein of social realism. During the 1940s and 1950s he became deeply invested in portraying everyday Manhattan and Harlem scenes. He first became interested in the Ashcan school at the National Academy of Design, and remained committed to an interest in working with urban scenes. His lively treatment of people and events revealed his affinity for sixteenth-century artist Pieter Breughel...

Biography:
John Hermansader (1915–2005) was an American painter, graphic designer, and jazz fan. He is remembered for his iconic designs of Blue Note record covers.
John Bancroft Hermansader was born on November 1, 1915 near Reading, Pennsylvania. In the 1930s, he studied at the Memphis Academy of Art in Tennessee and the New Bauhaus in Chicago, Illinois. In New York City he studied with Robert Motherwell at the New School of Social Research.
In 1939, he and his wife Rosemary were founders of the Hot Club of Newark, New Jersey, a significant group of jazz enthusiasts. John became the first president.
In 1951, when Blue Note Records began issuing 10 inch records, Hermansader was one of their first designers, along with Paul Bacon and Gil Melle. Looking back at this era, Michael Cuscuna of Mosaic Records said, “ What John Hermansader and Paul Bacon really did was evoke the feeling of the music. They used everything from Bauhaus designs to things that were really otherworldly.” Angelynn Grant adds, “When people think of Blue Note covers they think of Frank Wolff”s photography and Reid Miles design. But John Hermansader laid the groundwork that got them going along that path.” Richard Cook, who wrote Blue Note Records: The Biography states, “Hermansader in particular balanced the twin issues of photography and type in a way that would mirror the concerns of the Blue Note of the years ahead.”
“John Hermansader was passionate about oil painting, “beautiful lyrical abstractions, full of color and movement.” He was an abstract expressionist painter who drew inspiration for his work from listening to jazz.” - (Obituary, Pilot, Redding Conn., July 14, 2005, p. 32A)
