The fruits contained in an overturned basket are scattered on the table around an old bottle covered with esparto grass, giving a rich note of color and contrasting textures.
The warm light projected on the entire scene, the roughness of the back wall with its shadows, and the brightness of the horizontal plane of the table, constitute the environment of this delicate composition.
Juan Carlos Ospina Ortiz (Colombia 1963), practices realistic figuration with themes of clear Spanish influence. The artist settled in Andalusia (Spain), where, searching for his roots, he immersed himself in the music, folklore, and traditions of that country.
In his timeless classic still lifes, we can see the influence of the great masters of 17th century Spanish painting such as Zurbarán and Sanchez Cotán.

In 1994 I returned to Naples, the city where I was born and had been missing for 10 years after moving to Rome in 1984. I returned to see the MIRACLE achieved by the G7 with the Presidents of the most powerful countries led by Bill Clinton, US President. It was a wonderful visit to my city reborn in its ancient splendor! I took over 5,000 photos of the squares and monuments of Naples with my Nikon. I returned to Rome and had all the photos printed and put them on various tables and assembled all the various pieces. I immediately realized that parts were missing which I completed with paint. A spontaneous gesture with which I had unconsciously achieved a great innovation: I had combined the REALITY of photography with the DREAM represented by painting. Silvia, my muse who knew me well, when I showed her the first work IMPERATING MALE (R:0176) that I had done she said to me: "Dario you have united the TWO WORLDS of your life: that of your childhood with the sensitivity of the dreamer with the concrete one that they gave you taught your parents with education, studies (degree in Economic Sciences) and work started at 15 years old in your family's copper industry. These formative years had distanced myself from those of childhood when I studied the piano and dreamed of becoming an orchestra conductor. I also drew and painted with my imagination in search of the affections I was missing. In fact my parents were busy in the factory (copper production) rebuilding Italy destroyed by the recently ended war. I then refined PHOTO-PAINTING which developed into DIGITAL PROCESSING having replaced the BRUSH with the MOUSE to fill the gaps left by the photography and complete the REALITY which with painting became another FANTASTIC reality.

This work is part of the "research" PLACES OF MEMORY Cities revisited by me in a fantastic way. In fact I use my exclusive PHOTOPAINTING technique with a photographic element to which I add painting (oil or acrylic) to create a NEW REALITY.
REIGNING MALE (R:0176) NAPLES ITALYThe construction of the Castel Nuovo, also called Maschio Angioino, began in 1279, under the reign of Charles I of Anjou. Due to its strategic position, the new castle was not only a royal residence, but also a fortress. The Castle is located in the center of Naples and by the sea and only in 1600 was no longer home to the Kings when Naples was conquered by the Spanish. In fact, a few steps away was built the Royal Palace to accommodate the viceroys as representatives of the kings of Spain until 1734, when Charles of Bourbon became king of Naples and made it its official seat. Then with the conquest of Naples by the Habsburg emperors it became their home. Given its importance I wanted to give the Male an imposing look that soared towards the sky. MariaManuela’s pictures define the contrasts between the culture of the Far East and the western world’s pop-culture at the same time as they bring the two forms together. She derives her inspiration from classic Japanese woodcuts and their motifs of fantastically coiffured, cherry-lipsticked women, dressed in exquisitely patterned kimonos. But what she presents for the viewer are modern young Japanese women in mini-skirts, dancing among the cherry blossom and haiku poems.
Her Pop Icons are painted in vinyl on linen canvas – layer upon layer laboriously laid down to achieve the effect of a printed, japanned surface. The lines of the lips, the semi-circular contours of the eyes and the billowing coiffures are expressed against a monochromatic background. Her advertisement-like images combine mystique with unequivocal simplicity, setting a stage for all manner of different facial expressions – melancholy, pensive, jovial.
Born in Stockholm in 1959, Maria Manuela Vintilescu’s first serious encounter with art came at the age of seven. It was with fascination that she viewed Niki de Saint-Phalle’s giant sculpture She, then displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. After graduating from the Ecole Française in Stockholm, Maria took courses in painting, drawing and advertising. After ten years as a scene painter in the theatre, she turned to her own art. Her Pop Icons appeared for the first time in 1998. Two years later her Flower Year suite was exhibited in the Stockholm Spring Show at Liljevalch’s Gallery. These twelve female portraits were published in booklet form accompanied by Japanese haiku poetry interpreted by her father, Jan Vintilescu. It was his book that had first introduced this Japanese lyric form to a wider audience of Swedes in 1959.
Since the exhibition at Liljevalchs in 2000, her Pop Icons have been exposed at galeries, art fairs and museums in Europe and elsewhere, like in Tokyo Art Factory in Japan, at Villa Tamaris-Centre d’art in la Seyne-sur-Mer and at SOMA Museum of modern Art in Seoul.
In much the same way as the haiku moves us by the eloquence of its brevity, MariaManuela seeks through her pictures to convey situations, facial expressions and frames of mind by the most sparing and subtle of means. Her father had sought the same in rendering the haikus of the Japanese poet...
