De Ruth, a native of Czechoslovakia and an American citizen, spent the years of World War II being shunted through five different concentration camps, including the infamous Auschwitz. He made four escape attempts and finally made good on his fifth try.
De Ruth constantly sought materials with which to draw, but "The only things we had were the few pieces of cloth we wore," he recalls. By chance, he was transferred to Germany as part of a labor detail and managed to sneak a pencil away from the camp supervisor. "I became a perfect thief during those years," he says. De Ruth drew a mother and child on a scrap of paper he scrounged from the factory where he worked and filled it in with shadings of coffee in various strengths-his finger was his brush. He exchanged the sketch for a piece of bread from a camp guard, and in effect, sold his first painting.
In March of 1945, after being transferred to his native Czechoslovakia, he made his successful escape "knowing every step of the way." After the war, De Ruth became the commissar in a small Czech town and remained in the post for one year, just long enough to forge some documents that allowed him to flee to England. He took up residence in London and enrolled at the Ruskin Art School in Oxford University. He arrived in the USA in 1948.
There are times in the life of a painter when his dedication to his art is overshadowed by the immediate requirements of self-preservation. This was one of those times! From '48 to 1955 he supported himself by working at night, earning his way painting designs on neckties and bathroom cups...

Enrique Chavarría (1927-1998) was a Mexican painter and neo-surrealist, whose fantastic imagery carries forward the work of the Mexican Surrealists. He created hundreds of easel-sized oil paintings on masonite and numerous smaller works. For four decades his principal patron was Bryna Prensky, an American gallery owner from Florida who moved to Mexico City in 1954. She bought most of Chavarría’s known works for her gallery and her own collection.
Prensky said she often found Chavarría in his pajamas at mid-day. He read widely and painted dreamlike images that reflect his wide-ranging scholarly interests. About the artist:
Since his birth in Indianapolis, Indiana on May 19, 1921, Don Peters has continually expressed his multifaceted talents. While serving in the US Marine Corps. at the age of 19, Don received his first international recognition from combat sketches made between 1942 and 1945. Exhibited in the National Galleries of London and throughout the US. These sketches earned Don a scholarship from the National Newspaperman's Association, metaphysics, spiritual space, romantic realism and miniaturism. His preference for the rapidly drying medium of acrylic allows Don to achieve drama in his color placement.
He began his career in Hollywood in 1953, where he worked with Walt Disney, M.G.M., Paramount, Twentieth Century Fox, Warner Brow., Columbia and Filmation. In 1964, Don won the Venice Film Festival award for his screenplay, "The Soldier." Also, in 1966, Don received the Academy Award Nomination for the original screenplay and story "Naked Prey". 1971 Don was a background Artists on the film Journey Back to OZ aka Return to OZ. Cartoonist linked to Editorial Bruguera and its agency Creaciones Editoriales. She got her start drawing girls' or adventure comics in Stories and the Sissi Graphic Novel Supplement. Much of her work from the 1960s was aimed at the European market for young women's magazines through the Selecciones Ilustradas agency. Anecdotally, he collaborated with Marvel Comics, drawing a romantic comic based on a script by Stan Lee for the title My Love (later republished in Our Love Story), credited there as Enrique Monserratt.
He retired from comics in the 1980s to focus on painting.
He was also an Olympic gymnast, a member of the Barcelona Gymnastics Center and the Barcino Tennis Club.
