Pierre Eugene Duteurtre (French, 1911-1989) better known under the pseudonym DUT, was born on 10 July 1911 at Deuil-la-Barre (Val d'Oise) and died on 9 November 1989. He was a creator of comics and a painter.
His career as a draftsman begins in the 1930s. He did not begin to devote himself fully to painting until 1968.
From 1934 to 1939, he worked for the Parisian society of edition (EPS). Dut spent the essential part of his career cooperating with the scenarist Marijac. Their first collaboration was in Le Coq Hardi in 1947 with part two of 'La Guerre de la Terre' (succeeding Auguste Liquois), soon followed by 'Sitting Bull', a western which they produced from 1948 until 1952. This series included 277 installments from 1948 to 1953, in the journal Coq Hardi. It was reprinted by the Éditions Glénat, in 2 albums which appeared in 1978 and 1979.
After 1968 he abandoned the comic strip to devote himself fully to painting.

By Victor Gabriel Gilbert
Located in Missouri, MO
Early 20th Century Oil Painting by Victor Gilbert. Canvas dimensions 14.75 x 18 inches. Framed dimensions 22 x 25 inches.
Born Paris, France 1847; Died 1933
Victor Gilbert's natural ability as an artist was recognized early, but his family lacked the financial resources to send the young man to the École des Beaux-Arts. Rather than enrolling in the École, Gilbert was apprenticed to Eugene Adam as an artisan painter and decorator. His only formal education was evening classes with Pierre Levasseur at the École de la ville de Paris.
Perhaps it was his early immersion into la vie quotidienne that formed the basis for his later choices of subject matter for his art, that of the markets and streets of Paris.
Despite his lack of formal training, Gilbert's admissions to the Paris Salons of 1873 and 1874 were very well received by audiences and critics alike; at this time he was supported by the dealer Paul Martin, who was an important proponent of the Impressionist movement.
Gilbert emerged in the early 1880s as the primary Realist painter to record the French marketplace...

La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
By Georges d'Espagnat
Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work.
Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York).
The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants.
By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...
