ALEXANDER STOLIN, born and raised in Kiev, Ukraine (under the former Soviet Socialist Republic), where he received intensive training and a master of fine arts degree in his homeland’s traditional art academies. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1992, met his future wife in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, then married and settled in New Orleans. He maintains a home and studio in Madisonville, Louisiana, and is a significant but understated figure in the New Orleans art community. As art critic D. Eric Bookhardt suggested in 2002, “Stolin is more accomplished than he is famous.” His art, often exhibited in thematic series that incorporate a variety of media, ranges from intimate portraits to large-scale murals (one measuring twelve feet by seventy-two feet). He has worked on a progressively larger scale, most recently designing and painting projects for the Louisiana film industry. Stolin’s technically proficient and complexly layered art reflects a unique fusion of the academic training he received in Kiev and his evolving response to the very different culture, lifestyle, and subject matter he has discovered in New Orleans, Madisonville, and the Gulf South.

The roots for Peter Kolin’s fascinating world of Surrealist Fantasy, Magic Realist images can be traced back to the art of Mannerism, a brief period - approximately 1520 to 1610 - between the Renaissance and Age of the Baroque. In Mannerist paintings composition had no focal point and space could be ambiguous. Surreal figures could be characterized by athletic bending and twisting with distortions, exaggerations, elastic elongation of the limbs, bizarre or graceful posturing and the rendering of the heads as uniformly small and oval. (reminds me very much of some of the compositions of Salvador Dali) The composition was full of clashing symbolist colors very unlike the balanced, natural and often dramatic colors of the High Renaissance. Mannerist works presented instability and restlessness and also showed a fondness for allegories with lascivious undertones. Kolin, an exceptionally gifted painter within this tradition, creates gorgeous and mysterious fantasies of Surrealism with each work opening a new and more exciting fantastic world. His narrative world of images and symbols is presented in his own metaphorical language but with a visual accuracy solidly rooted in technical perfection. Framed in a dark wood frame, with fabric liner and brown bevel. It is in excellent condition, the frame have minor restorations barely visible.
About the artist:
Carlo Wahlbeck was born in Stockholm, Sweden in 1933. His studies from early youth included travel and visits to major museums in Europe. During a visit to the United States, Carlo was introduced to the Native American Indian and the rich history of the American West. He moved to Southern California in 1960 and still calls it home today.
Between 1960 and today, Carlo has traveled throughout the Southwestern United States and Mexico. For many years, he lived among the Navajo and Zunis, painting a great many surreal works that embodied their legends and outlook. He also spent 2 years in Mexico living among the Huichol people in the inaccessible mountains north of Tepic, painting the Indian religion and the white man's religion as seen through Huichol eyes.
Between 1979 and today, he mastered the technique and came to control it, producing a fabulous new medium base for his expressions. The evolvement of his art has show much diversification and his works can be found in prominent private and corporate collections, as well as museums both here in the United States and abroad.
