Born in New York City in 1901, Francis Vandeveer Kughler attended Cooper Union, the Mechanics' Institute, and the National Academy of Design School of Art where he met Charlotte Livingston, an artist, whom he was later to marry.
During this period he was the winner of a Tiffany scholarship, which provided him a summer of landscape painting at the Louis Comfort Tiffany estate at Oyster Bay, L.I.
In the 1940s, Kughler became the President of the Salmagundi Club, a well-known art club in Washington Square in New York City.Well-known as a muralist, society portrait painter and lithographer, he was a prolific painter who made cityscapes, landscapes, and nudes. He and his wife, Charlotte Livingston, lived and worked in Bronx, New York.

A very beautiful painting, romantic and very decorative, both monumental in its composition and touching in its subject, especially since it stands out in a tight frame. The knight's farewell to his beloved is represented on a background marked by naturalism with its meadow, its flowers, its wood, its river and its very beautiful colors. The painting is of the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th century, and he is certainly French as indicated by the mtamp of the canvas merchant on the back of the canvas (the Jules Chauvin house which was active at 33 rue du Dragon in Paris between 1895 and 1937). The style of our painting is romantic, even picturesque. The knight carries the "Reichsadler", the imperial eagle of the Holy Roman Empire and the lady a satchel with various signs including bear paw prints. The style is naturalistic and reminds of the English painters of the 1890s inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites and Art Nouveau with religious and medieval themes and it is very close to nature with their settings of meadow, flowers and woods. The English art historian John Christian spoke of the last English Romantics in relation to these painters of the end of the century, Burne-Jones, Stanley Spencer or John William Waterhouse. Those motifs are also found here, of the meadow, flowers, wood and river that we often see in Waterhouse's art in particular. One of the leading artists in Genoa during the second half of the seventeenth century, Domenico Piola came from a successful family of artists, renowned for their many illusionistic ceiling programs throughout Genoese churches and palaces. A prolific draughtsman and painter, Domenico oversaw an extremely productive studio. In addition to his collaborations with numerous other artists, Domenico also provided many designs for book illustrations and prints that circulated throughout Europe, earning him international exposure and high acclaim in his own day.
As Dr. Anna Orlando has indicated (written communication), the present work is an early work by Piola, datable from the late 1640s. At this time the young artist came strongly under the influence of Castiglione and Valerio Castello, while admiring the works of Giulio Cesare Procaccini. Piola’s works from this period are exuberant and fluid, and the artist’s love of portraying children is evident from the angels and putti that populate both his altarpieces and more intimate paintings.

William Blake’s oil painting asks us to perceive the powerful layers of history that shape both art and memory. In Blake’s painting is a man, but what Blake painted is an idea. Hugh Goffinet stares out from the canvas in the dress of a soldier, without being one. He is a reenactor of an African American volunteer in the Abraham Lincoln Battalion. His inspiration is the Lincolns—the battalion’s volunteers—but they are pictured only symbolically, in his dress. Their inspiration was Lincoln, who many decades earlier helped give meaning to the American Civil War, but who is invisible in the painting except by implication—the pose of Hugh Goffinet—which carefully emulates Lincoln’s pose in the celebrated presidential portrait by George Healy. Entirely hidden, at the deepest layer of history, is the true source of inspiration: the human desire for equality and freedom. To understand, honor, and preserve it requires remembrance, in this case with history animating reenactors who animate art that animates memory.
Artist, William Blake channels the spirit of Winslow Homer's war imagery, bringing it into the contemporary world, asking us to reflect upon the decisions forced to be made in wartime, some of which will never leave us. As for the paintings, William uses materials and methods of the Civil War era. The linen on which he paints was in use at that time as well as the tubed oil paints. He is one of the few artists who tacks his canvas to the stretchers using similar tacks that would have been used by Winslow Homer. While he leaves the works unframed for this reason, the artwork could certainly be framed. This piece is unframed. Please contact the gallery for framing options.

Known for his highly charged depictions of Civil War reenactments, William Blake’s powerful paintings show the recursive bodies of reenactors as they gesture across time. Participating in over 40 reenactment events, Blake currently interprets as the artist-correspondent Winslow Homer at these battle reenactments. He immerses himself in the materiality of his own obsession by constructing period clothes, camping on battlefields, and documenting the reenactment similar to Homer’s documentation of the authentic war.
The figures in the paintings reverberate the past with respect and with a desire to educate, humble, and play. With each annual iteration of American Civil War reenactments, the reanimation of the past encourages a review of history and aids in its continuous revision.

Etienne Cail est né en 1991.
C’est dans le cadre de l’atelier deSèvres, qu’Etienne Cail conforté par ses pairsdécidera de prendre son envol dans le mondedes peintres.Nous somme en 2009, il n’a alors que 18 anset affaire rarissime il a déjà trouvé son style,sa « pâte ». Après la représentation de l’atelier qu’il a réalisé sous tous les angles, EtienneCail s’est engagé à construire « ses gueules »,des adversaires qu’il défiera à grand coup de pinceaux.
Au coeur des ateliers de cette Chine actuelle il découvre cet art à la fois puissant et subtil. Ici, les rebelles du monde de l’art ne sont pas des dissidents au sens strict du terme, ils se battent pour l’indépendance de la
création dans un pays où la liberté est encadrée. Cette capacité à créer une force intelligible malgré ces contraintes force l’admiration du jeune peintre qui se retourne sur d’anciennes provocations artistiques qu’il jugera dés lors trop faciles.Dés son retour en France, la création d’une nouvelle série de portraits appuient déjà cette nouvelle maturité et un nouveau projet prend parallèlement vie autour d’un songe: si tous les grands moments de l’histoire et les plus grands chefs...
