About the Item

Antique Painting of 1600s Banquet with Figures Memento Mori after Giovanni Martinelli death comes to the banquet table-memento mori circa 1635. The oil on canvas painting (lined with new frame) is inspired by the most famous work by the Tuscan painter from Montevarchi, Giovanni Martinelli 1600-1659. The macabre banquet portrays four characters intent on dining around a table with white tablecloth set with pewter plates and risers with pears and plums and dolphin with glass. The convivial dimension of this vanitas is suddenly disturbed by a presence toward which all the attentions of the diners converge: death. Depicted on the right side of the composition by a skeleton holding a cartouche with the inscription est hora seems to address the head of the table of this wealthy family (judging by the jewelry and clothing of the characters). The painting comes from a private collection, was restored in the 1990s and is in good condition. It dates from the second half of the 1600s and is presented in a modern oak frame with gold outline with a brass plaque attributing it to Italian Lombard artist Carlo Cane 1615-1688 To export an antique art object from Italy, an export license called BELLE ARTI must be applied for from the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage. the issuance of such a government license takes a couple of weeks or so, to be added to the order's shipping time.
