Death Comes to the Table Memento Mori by Giovanni Martinelli c. 1670
About the Item
Italian painting from 1600 Banquet with Figures Memento Mori by Giovanni Martinelli, titled Death Comes to the Banquet Table, vanitas circa 1635. The oil-on-canvas painting is inspired by the most famous work of the Tuscan painter from Montevarchi, Giovanni Martinelli 1600-1659, also known as Giovanni da Montevarchi, now on display at the New Orleans Museum of Art, Louisiana, USA.
The macabre banquet portrays four characters elegantly dressed seated around a table with white tablecloth set with pewter plates and risers with pear and plum fruit and glasses. The convivial atmosphere of this vanitas is suddenly disturbed by a presence toward which all the diners' attentions converge: death. Depicted on the right side of the composition by a skeleton holding a cartouche with the inscription est hora appears to address the figure on the right.
The painting comes from a private collection in Lombardy, was restored in the 1990s and is in good condition. It dates from the second half of the 1600s and has a modern oak frame with gold outline with a brass plaque attributing it to Charles Cane.
