About the Item

This fine antique oil painting depicts two ladies seated in a 19th Century style interior. In front of the woman on the right is an antique wool spinner; the woman pauses her work at the spinner to look up and smile at her female companion, who holds a length of un-spun wool in her lap. The scene is one of domestic harmony and bliss, which was one of the favourite themes of Portielje. The Belgian born artist showed a natural inclination to sensitivity when portraying his female sitters, as is evident from this intimate and thoughtful depiction of the two women. Edward Antoon Portielje, (1861-1949) was a 19th and early 20th Century artist from Antwerp. Portielje trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Antwerp where he studied under Charles Verlat, who also taught Vincent Van Gogh in the early 1880s. Portielje's work is notable for its refined, naturalistic style, and use of delicate brushstrokes to depict the finer details of his subject matter. The artist's skill is evident in the present 19th Century painting, which expressively plays with light and tonality to draw the viewer's eye to the two women in the centre. By depicting a large window in the background of the composition, Portielje cleverly illuminates the two seated figures through the use of lighter shades, while the darker tones are present at the edges of the canvas. Set in a stunning carved giltwood frame, the antique oil on canvas painting is signed, 'Edward Portielje' in its lower right hand corner. This work presents a unique opportunity to collect a painting by one of the most famous Flemish artists of his time. Canvas height 63cm, width 77.5cm With frame height 82cm, width 96cm, depth 17cm
