About the Item

A gorgeous floral still life which marries the depth and the richness found in the work of the Flemish old masters with the elegance and light of French painting. As you will see, there is a reason for this! Robert Mols was born on June 22, 1848 in the capital of the Flemish region of Belgium. Extraordinarily gifted, he studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he already obtained several prizes by the age of 13 . At 15, he exhibited for the first time in Antwerp. Mos was only 17 when he travelled to France fo the first time. He stayed notably in Paris and in Barbizon, a village on the edge of the forest of Fontainebleau where there was a thriving artist's colony. Mols studied with two of of the spearhead figures of the Barbizon movement, Jean François Milles and Jules Dupré. Mols exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1873 and his works, highly remarked, were on several occasions purchased by the French government. Numerous awards were given to Mols and he notably obtained the cross of the Order of Leopold in 1879, and in 1900, that of Knight of the Legion of Honour. Mol's work is present at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts and at the National Maritime Museum in Antwerp, at the Army Museum in Brussels and at the museums of Dunkirk , Prague and Sète. Please note that Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp owns a floral composition not dissimilar in style to the one presented here! Measured without the frame, the mahogany panel measures 36.5 x 46 cm

Lilac flowers at the door, 1901 uplifting floral still life large oil on canvas
Located in Norwich, GB
Here is a painting that will lift you - one feels happy every time one looks at it. It is such a lovely, unusual twist to the theme of the floral still life: here we have flowers, not in a vase, but attached to a wooden front door. I wonder if the artist did this with actual flowers, perhaps for a sweetheart, and then decided to paint the scene? At any rate: who wouldn't want to come home to find a large bunch of glorious lilac as they come home? The artist is Emile Baudoux (1850 -1929), who studied with Humbert and Cabanel. Paris-born, he liked to work in Normandy, where he had his studio. He exhibited his work at the "Salon des Artistes Français" until 1927, where he obtained a gold medal in 1910. The important oil on canvas presented here, dating from 1901, may have been shown at the Salon, as it bears an exhibition number "30" at the upper right of the canvas. It is signed and dated at the lower left as seen in the photos. Measuring 81 x 60 cm, the overall size including its original large oak frame...
