A stunning 19th century English Antique oil landscape with cows resting by a river.
Alfred Vickers was a painter of marine subjects and landscapes. He exhibited extensively throughout his life but notably at the Royal Academy (125 works), at Suffolk Street (81 works), and at the British Institution.
Vicker's sparkling light and rapid style has been compared to that of Boudin. Vickers painted many coastal views, particularly in the area of the Isle of White and the Solent.
Works by Vickers are in Glasgow, Nottingham, and Sheffield Art Galleries.
This is one of the finest quality Vickers I've ever seen let alone owned. At his best Vickers could paint with a lightness and quality rarely seen in British Art outside of John Constable or the finest work by Patrick Nasmyth.
If you are interested in collecting or decorating with fine 19th-century art this is a must for any collection.
Please do not confuse the paintings of Alfred H Vickers with this painter. He was also a landscape and river landscape painter but of lesser quality.
The piece is signed and inscribed on the reverse and is framed in a wonderful hand-carved wood English 19th century frame.
Provenance, M.Newman and Sons, London.
Any British art dealer with any experience or knowledge in 19th-century paintings will know the name of the M.Newman, as one of the finest Galleries to ever have dealt in British paintings. They only dealt with the finest examples of the artists they carried and many of the paintings that went through their hands are in important collections throughout the world.
