About the Item
Textured abstract landscape achieved through layered materials by Annis Allen (American, 1922-2018). Signed by the artist, lower left: "Annis Allen." Presented in a dark mauve painted wood frame with archival double matting. Image, 19.38"H x 24.25"W.
Annis Allen, was born in 1922 to a circuit riding Methodist minister and a music teacher. She came of age in West Texas during the Depression, graduated from Texas Tech when most women did not go to college, married in the middle of World War II, gave birth to her first child with a husband at war, and raised three children in Corpus Christi through the 1950's and 60's. She then embarked on a second career as an avid art student and visual artist that continued to the end of her life. After first educating herself in multiple styles and mediums, Annis focused on collage as her favored path to combine color, texture, form and found objects. During this time, she moved from Texas to the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico which brought vibrant color and humor to her work, followed by a number of years living in an old farm house outside Philadelphia, where her work matured. Annis returned to Texas in 1979 and settled in Austin. By that time, she routinely exhibited her work in multiple states and at annual art shows throughout the Southwest and received awards at juried art shows through the years. Although she stopped exhibiting several before her death, Annis continued to make art even after moving to an assisted living facility in 2016. Annis Allen died March 15, 2018 at the age of 95.

Artist Patrick O'Boyle exhibits an abstract landscape using a vivid palette. "This painting is purely an abstract reference to places I have sketched on location," says Patrick. He paints with an acrylic wash establishing shapes, color & texture placement. Using collaged material creates interest and draws the viewer closer to the piece.
About the Artist
Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.
