Adolphe Augustin Rey de Villette, known as Rey-Spitzer, enters the School of fine arts in Paris in 1883 in the studio of Louis-Jules André until 1887, after following courses at the School of Decorative Arts. He collaborated with the architect Paul Sédille for the Printemps store in 1885. Augustin Rey graduated from the School of Fine Arts in 1888. During his career as an architect he created many Protestant temples due to his Huguenot origins.
His painted work, mainly landscapes, is part of the symbolist aesthetic of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Some of his paintings and watercolors are reminiscent of symbolism painter like Charles Guilloux

Léopold Stevens was the son of Belgian-born painter Alfred Stevens (1823-1906), and was taught to paint by his father from an early age. He did not attend an art school.
In 1887, Léopold Stevens met the then-unknown Claude Debussy, befriended him and introduced him to his family, who received him on a regular basis.
He received a travel grant in 1892. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, winning a bronze medal in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle; at the 1902 Salon, he was given an entire room at the Grand Palais.
