Benjamin Hope
British Artist, Benjamin Hope "Street Scene, England"

About the Item

Raised in Oxford, he was born into a family immersed in the arts, with his mother, Jane Hope, being a painter, and his father an academic historian, with artistic lineage tracing through his grandparents as well. Having pursued Mathematics and Physics at the University of Warwick and completing Part III of the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge University, he furthered his academic journey by obtaining a PhD in theoretical nanoscience at Cambridge. Alongside his academic pursuits, he showcased his athleticism as a competitive runner, earning four Cambridge Blues for cross-country. In 1999, Hope was extended an invitation to join the Oxford Art Society. His artistic talents flourished, with his still-life piece titled Old Violin clinching the Oxford Times Critics' Choice award at the society's Members' Exhibition in 2001. The following year, in honor of the Bodleian Library's 400th anniversary, he was commissioned to create a commemorative still-life. Transitioning from academia in 2007, he ventured into the financial realm as a risk analyst in the City of London, aiming to accumulate resources to pursue a professional career in painting. By 2011, he made the bold decision to fully dedicate himself to painting, establishing his studio in Blackheath, South East London.
