About the Item

Benjamin Williams Leader RA British, (1831-1923) Fishing on the Thames near Goring Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1873, further inscribed verso Image size: 23.25 inches x 35.5 inches Size including frame: 30 inches x 42.25 inches Provenance: Richard Green, 36 Dover Street, London W1, Church Street Gallery, Stow-on-the-Wold. A superb landscape painting of figures fishing on the Thames near Goring by Benjamin Williams Leader. An angler is depicted fishing in a punt along the side of the river bank, as two others and a black and white dog watch on. Further along the bank, two other fishermen are shown standing on a wooden footbridge having cast their lines out on either side. In the far distance to the left, a herd of cows can be seen grazing in a meadow. Benjamin Williams Leader was born Benjamin Leader Williams on 12 March, 1831 in Worcester. His father was Edward Leader Williams, a civil engineer and keen amateur artist and his mother was Sarah Whiting, who were both originally from Reading in Berkshire. He was educated at the Royal Grammar School in Worcester and initially followed in his father’s footsteps to become an engineer. During the day he worked at his father’s office but in the evenings studied art at the Worcester School of Design. His father actively encouraged him in his art and he would often accompany him on sketching trips in the Severn Valley, near where he lived. As a young man, he lived at Diglis House in Worcester with his family and in 1853 became a student at Royal Academy schools, allowing him to advance his artistic studies further. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1854 using the name Benjamin Williams Leader probably to avoid confusion with another artist of a similar name. His success and achievements at the RA enabled him to become a full-time artist by his late 20’s. He also exhibited at the British Institution from 1855 and at the Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham Society of Artists, Liverpool Academy and Glasgow Academy. He married the flower artist Mary Eastlake on 29 August, 1876 at Buckland Monachorum, Devon. After their marriage they moved to The Lodge at Whittington just outside Worcester. His wife continued painting after they were married and exhibited at the RA. Their son Benjamin Eastlake Leader (1877-1916) also became an artist, most likely receiving tutoring from both his parents. In 1883 he was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (ARA) becoming a full academician in 1898. He won a number of accolades during his life including a gold medal in Paris in 1889 and was award the legion of honour in the same year, at the instigation of Meisonier. He also won a medal at the Chicago Exhibition of 1893. Leader travelled around England and Wales painting landscapes, particularly in the areas near where he lived such as Severn Valley in Worcestershire as well as Warwickshire, Devon and Surrey. He also spent time in Scotland, Belgium, France, Germany and Switzerland. Around 1890, he settled at Burrows Cross, near Gomshall in Surrey where he lived for the rest of his life. He died at Burrows Cross on 22 March 1923 and was buried at St James’s cemetery in Shere. Examples of his work are held by many public institutions throughout the UK including: the Blackburn Museum, Bodelwyddan Castle, Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Bristol Museum, Dudley Museum, Ferens Art Gallery, Glasgow Museum, Grundy Art Gallery, Guildhall Art Gallery, Harris Museum, Haworth Art Gallery, Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Leicester Museum, The National Library of Wales , Manchester Art Gallery, National Trust, Towneley Hall Art Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, Walker Art Gallery, Wednesbury Museum and Worcester City Museum. 19th Century exhibition size landscape oil painting of Sheep on a cliff
By Charles Jones (b.1836)
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Charles Jones British, (1836-1892) Sheep Resting Oil on canvas, signed with monogram & dated 1877, further inscribed verso Image size: 35 inches x 59 inches Size including frame: 47 inches x 71 inches Exhibition Size Painting A fantastic exhibition sized landscape painting of sheep on a cliff top by the coast by Charles ‘Sheep’ Jones. At the time he produced this painting, Jones was living at Heathercroft, Balham Hill in London. Given the size and quality of the work it was most likely an exhibition piece. The topography and landscape suggest that this is the Dorset coast, one of his favourite places to paint. Charles Jones was an animal painter who was born in Stepney, London in 1836. He was the son of the artist Samuel John Egbert Jones (1797-1861) and Dinah Jones. He lived with his parents and 9 siblings in Mile End and was a pupil of his father. In September 1859, he married Frances Rosalinda Downe, who was born in America. His son Arthur Bertram Loud (1863-1930) also became an artist. They lived at 12 Hayes Place, Lisson Grove from where he made his debut in London at the Royal Academy in 1861. He also exhibited at the British Institution, Suffolk Street, New Watercolour Society, Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. By 1867, he had become a successful artist and they had moved to 7 Paragon Place, Brixton Hill. From 1874 he lived at Heathercroft, Balham Hill where he spent the rest of his life. Jones became well known for specialising in paintings of sheep, cattle and deer in landscape settings. He spent his time travelling around visiting areas such as Devon, Dorset, Kent, Sussex and the Highlands. However, it is for his skilful painting of sheep that he is perhaps best known, and for which earned him the nickname of ‘Sheep’ Jones. As well as the major London galleries, he also exhibited provincially at various locations including: the Royal Cambrian Academy where he was elected a member in 1886, the Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester City Art Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Birmingham and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. Some of the smaller more intimate galleries he exhibited at were Arthur Tooth & Sons and Thomas...
