James Edwin Meadows was born in Essex in 1828. His father was James Meadows Snr (1798-1864) a talented painter of inshore and coastal scenes, whom he studied under. His brothers Edwin Lewis, Alfred John, William and Arthur Joseph Meadows, were also artists. He lived and worked in the London area for most of his life, where he became renowned for his landscape views of Essex, Kent, Sussex, Surrey and the Isle of Wight. Meadows exhibited many paintings at the Royal Academy, British Institute and the Royal Society of British Artist (1853-1875). He also exhibited at the major provincial galleries such as Walker Art Galleries, Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery and the Royal Hibernian Academy.
The composition of his paintings are highly appealing, often containing figures, cottages, dogs and other animals such as ducks, which have made his works as popular and sought after today as they were in his lifetime. Examples of his work can be found in the Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the Ramsgate Library.
Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished.

- 19th century German romantic landscape painting - Temple Valley Sicily ItalyBy Andreas AchenbachLocated in Antwerp, BEHuge 19th century romantic painting depicting a sunset over the Temple Valley in Agrigento, Italy This magnificent painting depicts the famous Temple Valley in Sicily. We have visited the site to find out from which viewpoint the painter painted this beautiful work. Fortunately, the site remains largely unchanged from how it was in 1856 and we found out that the painter depicted the temples of Hera (on the left) and Concordia (in the distance). He (or she) likely sat on top of the hill next to the temple of Hera while he sketched the magnificent scenery of the sun setting in the sea behind the temple of Concordia. The present painting is topologically correct, however the artist might have taken some artistic liberty in rearranging the remains of the columns of the Hera temple to create a better perspective and direct the gaze of the viewer to the focal point of the composition; the temple of Concordia. Although the painting was long believed to have been created by an American painter, as the dramatic light and magnificent landscape are quite reminiscent of Hudson River School paintings, it is more likely that the painting has been created by a German romantic...Category

- A Stream in the Forest - British Victorian 1859 art landscape oil paintingBy George ColeLocated in London, GBA fine and very detailed large Victorian British landscape painting. Painted in oil on canvas it is by listed and exhibited Victorian artist George Cole, dated 1859. A wonderful large work by Cole and one of his best. Cows are cooling themselves in the stream and a couple sit beside the water. A really charming Victorian painting. Signed lower right George Cole and dated 1859. Provenance. Surrey estate. Condition. Oil on canvas, image size is 40 inches by 30 inches and in good condition. Housed in a complementary frame, 50 inches by 40 inches framed and in good condition. George Cole (1810-1883) was a portrait landscape and animal painter in oils. He was the father of George Vicat Cole. Cole was born in Portsmouth to James and Elizabeth Cole. His mother died when he was 9 years old. According to the artist's grandson, Rex Vicat Cole, he was apprenticed to a ship's painter in the Royal Navy dockyards at Portsmouth. He taught himself to paint pictures, at first portraits and animals; he also painted posters for Wombwell's menagerie. In 1838 Cole's painting The Farm Yard was shown at the Society of British Artists. When he was 30 he changed his focus to landscapes and received instruction from John Wilson and started exhibiting in 1840. One anecdote has him painting the portrait of a Dutch merchant in Portsmouth. After the sitter refused to pay him, saying it was a bad likeness, Cole added wings and put the painting in a shop window with the title The Flying Dutchman. The man's friends recognised him and laughed; he paid for the painting, and Cole painted out the wings. His career has been regarded as a good example of the Victorian self-made man: in 1831 he married Eliza Vicat, of an old French Huguenot family. In 1852 he moved to Fulham and in 1855 to Kensington, where he lived for the rest of his life. In the mid-1860s he purchased Coombe Lodge, a small estate in Hampshire. In a series of richly coloured and detailed landscapes on large canvases executed during the 1860s and 1870s, Cole created an idealized version of the Hampshire moorlands and agricultural landscape; examples include Fern Carting, Harting Coombe (1873, Russell-Cotes Art Gallery and Museum, Bournemouth). Cattle continued to play an important role in his compositions, and he specialized in the depiction of river scenery with cows watering...Category
