About the Item
Born in New York City in 1906, Bertram George was the son of beloved Lyme, Connecticut artist George Bruestle. The younger Bruestle’s earliest works were very similar to those of his father, as they often painted together. As years passed, Bertram’s style evolved, especially as he relocated to Maryland in the late 1920’s. There, he met and married Harriet Buckey of Frederick. Bruestle lectured and worked closely with the State Game Department of Maryland and the National Association of Audubon Societies. By 1940, however, he had moved to Connecticut, into his late father’s house and studio back in Lyme.
This bright summer landscape is a fine example of Bruestle’s mature period, likely completed around 1950.. There is a modern sensibility to the simple compositional shapes and color choices. Clearly, there is an illustrative quality to this scene, as there are with most of his works from 1940 onward. The location depicted in this painting is likely within the rolling hills of upstate Connecticut. The painting is signed lower right.
The painting is in very good condition, recently cleaned and varnished. There are no issues to report. The period carved wood frame is of the period of the painting and shows the work beautifully. It is in good condition, with only very minor wear that one would expect for its age. The oil on canvas measures 24” x 30” and the overall framed dimensions are 29” x 35”. This Bertram Bruestle Connecticut landscape is ready to hang on the wall of your choice to enjoy.

View AllAmerican Modernist Town Scene Painting by Pennsylvania artist Joseph M. Plavcan
Located in Baltimore, MD
This colorful late spring scene is most likely around Erie, Pennsylvania. Artist and teacher Joseph M. Plavcan generally painted around the area in which he lived for over 50 years.
Joseph Michael Plavcan was born near Pittsburg, in Braddock. He attended the Pennsylvania Academy in 1926, studying with renowned New Hope artist Daniel Garber. Through a scholarship, he went to Europe to study. He returned to Erie in 1932 and became an art instructor, teaching for the next 38 years. Plavcan went far beyond teaching trade school requirements and instilled a true sense of sophisticated artistry in his students. During his artistic career, he exhibited often in Philadelphia, Washington, New York and Chicago.
This painting, oil on canvas, demonstrates Plavcan’s style, utilizing figurative abstraction with a modernist color palette. The paint is not over applied and areas are treated with smooth broad brush strokes. The hint of late blooming leaves are dashes of paint applied in a fast yet confident manner. Plavcan’s sense of light, demonstrated in the distant church tower is spot on.
While not signed, there are two official estate stamps on the reverse that attest to the authenticity of Plavcan’s work. The piece measures 16” x 20” and appears to be canvas applied to a back board. This was likely done by the former retailer, Hudson House Galleries in Hagerstown, Maryland. That shop was a fine regional art gallery and antiques shop for decades until its closure about five years ago. The painting is nicely framed in a modernist gold wood frame with a subtle pink liner. The overall framed dimensions are about 20” x 24”. The painting is in very good condition, bright and crisp. There is a very minor vertical crease above the peak of the house that is truly barely noticeable from any distance. Other than that, all is fine with the work and its frame.
This strong, colorful work by Joseph Plavcan...

Historical Southern Painting - North Carolina Homestead - Belcross, Camden Co.
Located in Baltimore, MD
If you have interest in Eastern North Carolina Tidewater history and architecture, this painting may be a fine addition to your home or collection. It is an oil on board of the Sanderlin House in Belcross, Camden County. There is quite a bit of history written on a card on the back board that describes the family members of the house in the late 19th century.
Camden is the courthouse town for Camden County. It is a small town located on the east side of the Pasquotank River, a few miles from Elizabeth City. Belcross is an area just outside of town. Apparently two near-identical houses were built ca 1840’s by the Sanderlin brothers, William and Joseph. One was left to ruin and disappeared, the other seems to possibly remain. In any event, per the information included, this is a view of the house by artist Miss Ella Bidgood, ca 1895. An Ella Bidgood, born in Baltimore in 1855, has been identified and she was a resident of Norfolk, Virginia with her family in the 1900 census. She is likely the artist of this painting. It is painted in a somewhat naive style but competently shows details of the house in nice, vivid colors. The painting is not signed but the information on the back side seems completely reliable.
The painting itself is oil on board and measures 12” x 18”. It has been recently cleaned and varnished. It is in very good condition with no issues to report. It is housed in a substantial gold painted frame of the period with interesting detailing. Overall framed measurements are 19” x 24”. The frame is in good solid condition with no issues to report, other than expected very minor age-related wear. Note that the photos show some glare from the varnish in places that really doesn’t show in general light.
