About the Item

Twentieth Century Landscape Oil Painting of Goodrich Castle Ruins by the side of the River Wye England. Goodrich Castle on the River Wye, Herefordshire Oil painting on panel, with oil sketch of Symonds Yat verso. Housed in handmade gold and coloured Whistler style frame. Beautiful mid 20th century landscape of the River Wye with the ruins of Goodrich Castle and Cattle roaming in the lush green meadows. If you are not familiar with the work of Campbell Mellon then this is a treat! He was heavily influenced by both the East Anglian School and in particular Arnesby Brown. He is possibly most famous for his populous beach scenes which attract ever higher prices but I have always been more drawn to his Herefordshire Scenes. He lived at Symonds Yat for some of the war years and painted the landscape all around him, this suited his style so well with the abundance of beautiful countryside and cattle to ever inspire him. This is a real gem of a painting, cleaned and reframed in a handmade Whistler style frame. Painter in oil, especially of East Anglian beach and coastal scenes. Having studied painting privately with Carl Brennir in Nottingham, Mellon went on to settle in Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk, at the end of World War I, where he had tuition for three years from Arnesby Brown. Their styles are similar, and Mellon became noted for his small, uncomplicated, breezy panels of the Norfolk seaside. His pictures are in public collections in Bristol, Yarmouth, Sheffield and elsewhere. He exhibited at the Fine Art Society, the Royal Academy, Walker Art Gallery and many others. Goodrich Castle controlled a key location near Monmouth. The poet William Wordsworth described the castle "as the noblest ruin in Herefordshire". Campbell Mellon was based in East Anglia for many of the inter war years, but in 1940 he was bombed out of his home at Gorleston. He relocated to the Wye Valley near Symonds Yat for the rest of the war years. This work dates from that time.
