About the Item
'Picking Blackberries' is a 19th/early 20th century oil on canvas painting of a Scottish coastal path view with yellow gorse and berry bushes. Children are picking berries or sitting enjoying the view overlooking the sea, depicting halcyon days of summer. Scottish artist Charles Martin Hardie (1858-1916) was a member of the Scottish Royal Academy. He started work as a carpenter but turned to painting after encouragement by artist John Pettie and studied art in Edinburgh. He established an art studio there, and exhibited in Scotland and also in the Royal Academy. His work is represented in the Scottish National Gallery.
Hardie is known for portraiture, with excellent examples of poet Robbie Burns and Sir Walter Scott, but also narrative and historical paintings. He has demonstrated affinity with children as subjects, as in this lovely narrative of berry-picking, and landscapes.
'Picking Berries' has impressionistic qualities in light, sun and broad brushes of bushes and sea.
The painting is presented in a fine period frame with depth and ornate and decorative gilt carving. The canvas sight is 18.5 by 23.5, with a seven inch lining and frame. The frame depth is five inches.
Hardie signed the painting, lower left. This is overall very good condition, both the painting and the period frame. Both the artwork and the frame are in overall very good condition. The frame has very minor imperfections mostly behind the gilt carvings. Imperfections are to be expected in a painting this age.
This painting has clearly been cared for and cherished many years. Now it is ready to hang on your wall.

By Cornelis Bouter
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Springtime, 'In the Meadow' by Cornelis Bouter (1888-1966) is a Dutch painting with figures and landscape in an impressionist style with early spring blossoms. Idyllic scene by a river under tree blossoms, this fine oil on canvas painting is very well presented in an original frame. Children play while mother peels apples in a pleasant afternoon setting. Bouter is known for his paintings of mother and children in interiors. This is one of one of his outdoor paintings in lighter color and lovely landscape. His paintings often depict domestic bliss with titles like ‘Contentment’ and ‘Happy Days’. His work has been sold by Christie’s and internationally.

Edwardian Beach Scene, British/French early 20th century oil on canvas
Located in Hillsborough, NC
In the style of Eugene Boudin, artist that introduced Monet to plein art painting, this impressionist painting is also reminiscent of John Halliford’s 20th century painting of Deauville Beach on the west coast of France.
Richly-colored figurative and seascape painting in impressionist style, is presented in contemporary gold frame. The oil paint is raised and textured, lifting the beach sands, sea, sky and dresses from the canvas. Gathering is a formal occasion on the beach, in Edwardian period costuming. The guests look out over the sands to the sea and clouds, with distant sailboats and children playing in the waves.
This is a delightful contemporary painting, original oil on canvas dating to the 20th century. Framers tags verso are from Oxford and Glasgow in the UK.
Unsigned, but resembles artwork by Halliford previously sold in a fine art and antique auction in Paris.
In very good condition, with a few minor chips on the gold frame, but otherwise the painting is bright and beautiful.

Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.
