George Augustus Williams
Summer Evening

19th century

About the Item

Fine 19the century landscape by member of the renowned Williams family of artists, George Augustus (1814-1901). George Augustus was the son of Edward Williams (1781-1855), whose wife, children and relatives George Morland and James Ward were all accomplished artists. Each developed a style of their own, and George Augustus was known for his landscapes in particular river scenes and moonlit views over the water, as in this painting. Titled 'Summer Breeze' the artist paints in the colors of early nightfall with a moonlit glow over the water, cattle lowing and two figures viewing the evening light with their dog, and the warmth of the fire behind them. As other family members, George Augustus exhibited at the Royal Academy and the British Institution. His work was regularly exhibited in the more local Suffolk Street, with his scenes of the Thames, Kent and local views. 'Summer Breeze' is an oil on canvas painting, relined and offered with no frame. The original frame, apparently beyond repair, had a nameplate with his name in gilt. The painting retains a monogram with W, overlaid with A and then G, in the right hand lower corner. The canvas measures 16" high by 26" wide, unframed. Ready to be re-framed as your choose. Saltire Gallerie restored light and detail with careful cleaning. There is light but stable craquelure. No tears or other damage noted. Presented ready to frame as you choose. There is fraying and damage to extreme sides of the canvas that would have been covered by the original frame. Any new frame could cover these same areas, presenting the painting in overall good condition. Requires framing, then ready to hang!
