About the Item
'Alone at the Ferry' is signed by British artist A.F. Patten (Alfred Fowler Patten 1826- 1889 or after). This is a fine oil on canvas painting of a young Victorian woman waiting for the Ferry. The figure is in exquisite detail against impressionist village and greenery. The painting derives additional significance from the attachment to a popular song at the time, 'The Ferry Man's young, and the sun going down' that is handwritten verso, along with the title of the painting. The line comes from the song Twickenham Ferry by Theo Marziels in 1878. The song also refers to a young a lady with a pink rose running late and trying to cross the Thams River in the Ferry. This song and the date of the painting would coincide with the time the popular song would have been well known.
This painting may well depict a historic ferry crossing on the Thames that existed by the town of Twickenham.
Patten is known for his figurative/portraiture artistry and landscape work, and this is a lovely example. From the detailed Victorian leather shoe to the roses on her bodice and in her hand, to the bonnet edging and red ribbon in curls of hair, the art is at once crisp and romantic.
The canvas measures just over 28" high and 22" wide, with an ornate gilded frame, in the original period. The painting is in very good condition, with three tiny dots in the sky. The frame has small losses, retouched with gilt paint to blend, and is otherwise consistent with the age. With the frame the painting measures 39" high by 33" wide and three inches deep.
This painting, with the song and location presents a story of its own, in addition to being a fine oil painting ready to hang!

Fine 19th century oil painting of a bustling Austrian/Germanic village with horse, rider and various figures outside an Inn, attributed to Arthur Georg Ramberg (1819-1879), well known for figurative genre paintings. The rider is carrying a bugle, apparently announcing news to the people; men are sitting by the table drinking, one with a raised stein. Women walking by stop to listen, a man carrying a sack has stopped to watch the rider, people are in the Inn doorway, and one is looking out the window. Children pause their playing. The scene is under a large tree beside the Inn; a whole community waiting for news.
There is a great deal of detail in the scene, tree and Inn house...

Edwardian Beach Scene, British/French early 20th century oil on canvas
Located in Hillsborough, NC
In the style of Eugene Boudin, artist that introduced Monet to plein art painting, this impressionist painting is also reminiscent of John Halliford’s 20th century painting of Deauville Beach on the west coast of France.
Richly-colored figurative and seascape painting in impressionist style, is presented in contemporary gold frame. The oil paint is raised and textured, lifting the beach sands, sea, sky and dresses from the canvas. Gathering is a formal occasion on the beach, in Edwardian period costuming. The guests look out over the sands to the sea and clouds, with distant sailboats and children playing in the waves.
This is a delightful contemporary painting, original oil on canvas dating to the 20th century. Framers tags verso are from Oxford and Glasgow in the UK.
Unsigned, but resembles artwork by Halliford previously sold in a fine art and antique auction in Paris.
In very good condition, with a few minor chips on the gold frame, but otherwise the painting is bright and beautiful.
Provenance to a gallery in the United Kingdom, and imported to USA by Saltire Gallerie...

A Bustling Harbour Town
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863
Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches
Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches
A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...
