About the Item

"Spring Storm" is a powerful original painting by acclaimed American modernist Doel Reed (1894–1985), celebrated for his dramatic Southwestern landscapes and mastery of tone and texture. Painted in June 1980, this evocative scene captures a brooding spring storm sweeping across the rugged terrain of New Mexico or Oklahoma. Swirling clouds, distant rainfall, and a faint moon emerge from a turbulent sky, rendered in rich earth tones—deep browns, ochres, warm grays, and muted blues. Reed’s painterly style merges modernist abstraction with emotional realism, emphasizing the drama and grandeur of the American West. His background in aquatint printmaking is reflected in the precise, tonal layering of this composition. Signed by the artist in the lower right, Spring Storm is presented in a custom frame with outer dimensions of 24 ½ x 37 ½ x 1 ¼ inches; the image size measures 14 ¾ x 27 ¾ inches. Provenance: Private Collection, Denver, Colorado. About the Artist: Doel Reed was a key figure in American modernism and a pioneer of tonal landscape painting. A longtime professor at the University of Oklahoma, Reed later relocated to Taos, New Mexico, where he captured the region’s dramatic light and terrain. He was elected to the National Academy of Design, and his work is held in major institutions including The Met, Carnegie Museum, and the Honolulu Academy of Art. An exceptional example of Reed’s late-period painting, ideal for collectors of Southwestern, modernist, and mid-century American art.
