About the Item

Edward Wilkins Waite RBA British, (1854-1924) Geese by a Mill Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 13.5 inches x 17.5 inches Size including frame: 20 inches x 24 inches A lovely landscape painting of geese near a watermill by Edward Wilkins Waite. A flock of geese are shown crossing a meadow towards a mill and other buildings. Meanwhile on the opposite side of the riverbank, cattle can be seen grazing amongst trees. The mill appears very similar to that of Iffly Mill in Oxfordshire with the view most likely taken from Iffly Loch. A pen drawing of the mill was one of Waite’s first works to appear at the Royal Academy in 1878. Edward Wilkins Waite was born in Leatherhead, Surrey on 14 April, 1854 to the Rev. Edward Waite (1824-1910) and his wife Cleopha Julia (née Dukes). He came from a family of artists; his father was an amateur artist and his grandfather was the miniaturist William Watkin Waite (1778-1856). His brothers Charles Dukes Waite (1852-1923), Harold Waite (1870-1939 and Arthur Waite (1871-1900) also became artists. Waite was educated at Mansion House Grammar School in Leatherhead. Although it is not known if he attended art school, he would have undoubtedly received tuition from his father alongside his brothers. By 1871, the family had moved to Croydon where his father worked as a school teacher, later setting up a school in Blackheath in south east London. Perhaps looking for inspiration, he went to Ontario, Canada in 1874, where he took a job as a lumberjack and in his spare time sketched views of the landscapes. After returning to England where he lived with his parents in Blackheath, he decided to become a full time artist and in 1878 made his debut at the Royal Academy. He exhibited at the RA again in 1880 and thereafter continued to do so almost every year until 1919. He also exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists from 1880, becoming a member in 1893, and the New Gallery. As well as the London galleries, he also exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Hull and Manchester exhibitions and at the Crystal Palace Picture Gallery where he won a silver medal in 1889. From 1885, he lived in Brockham in Surrey where he spent his time painting views of the surrounding area as well as travelling further afield to paint. He married Barbara Isabella Tait on 22 January, 1891 at Richmond, Surrey. The couple settled in Abinger Hammer near Dorking where their 3 children were born. From 1907 he lived at Sunnymount near Guildford but in 1913 moved to Woolhampton in Berkshire. After briefly returning to Surrey around 1915, he spent his remaining years in Sussex living at Fittleworth. He continued to paint and exhibit right up until his death on 19 February, 1924. His work is represented in many public collections including the Guildford House Gallery, Mole Valley District Council, Museum of Croydon, Reading Museum, Shrewsbury Museum, West Northamptonshire Council, Williamson Art Museum and Worcester City Art Gallery. Presentation: The work is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

Scottish Impressionist landscape with Geese in a farmyard with trees, hay bales
By William Miller Frazer
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding Scottish landscape from the late 19th to early 20th century oil on canvas. Born in Scone, Frazer would participate in the growth and development of Scottish landscape painting during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Long desiring to compete with the artistic endeavors of England, Scotland was making sure to make its mark, investing heavily in its artists. Indeed, Frazer would attend the acclaimed Royal Scottish Academy to receive his art education, intended to compete with English schools such as the Royal Academy in London. When his studies were complete, he would then base himself out of Edinburgh as he pursued a professional career. Edinburgh was and remains, the art capital of Scotland, and there was no place better for budding artist to plant their roots. Frazer’s work is a prime example of the growing influence of impressionism on Scottish landscape art...
