Gaston CORNIL
French 1883 - 1960
A beautiful painting by Gaston Cornil of the coast of France. The texture within his palette works beautifully with his talent in creating a 3 dimensional effect with the waves and sand. An outstanding example, unique from his traditional landscapes.

He was born on May 15th 1883 in St Mande and studied at the School of Fine Art in Paris with Emile Dameron and Edmund Petitjean.
Through his career he exhibited regularly and from 1906-1939 at the Salon of French Artists, where he was awarded a gold medal in 1933. His work is held in the museum at Verdun.
Cornil specialised in painting landscapes (urban and rural) and landscapes with figures- for these he used oils and sometimes gouache using a skilful technique.
For his inspiration he frequently painted around the Barbizon (Fleury Mill) area- with his landscapes frequently containing a building of some sort like a mill or a distant factory.
He died in Paris in 1960 aged 77.
