About the Item

James Paterson Signed and dated 1895 On the reverse signed James Paterson 176 Bath Street, Glasgow Killniess, Moniaive, Scotland on the reverse Canvas Size: 21 x 26" (52 x 66cm) Outside Frame Size: 27 x 32 (67 x 82cm) Free Shipping 1854 - 1932 Born in Hillhead, Glasgow. He was the son of a successful manufacturer where he worked for four years. Paterson attended Glasgow Academy, then local art school where he had landscape lessons from A.D.Robertson. In 1874 he exhibited two works at the Royal Scottish Academy and a year later at the Glasgow Institute. In 1877 Paterson went to Paris to continue art studies under Jacquesson de la Chevreuse and then the studio of Jean Paul Laurens. His French training was very important and the tonal quality of his work reflects his years there. In 1882 returned to Glasgow and in 1884 married Eliza Ferguson, they settled in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire where he found the best type of landscape for his quiet, pastoral paintings, which show the influence of Corot and the Barbizon School. In the later 1890s Paterson began spending more time in Edinburgh, finally settling there in 1905. He was elected ARSA in 1896, and became Librarian and later Secretary of the Academy. He became a Royal Scottish Academy member in 1910, a Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Water Colours member in 1885 (and then President in 1923), an associate member of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours and a full member in 1908. He was a founder member of the Edinburgh Society of Eight in 1912. His work is represented in National Gallery of Scotland, Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Glasgow Art Gallery, Lillie Art Gallery, City of Edinburgh collection and National Gallery of New Zealand.
