This delightful turn of the century (early 20th century) oil on canvas painting represents an Italian landscape with one of the most famous squares in the world: Piazza San Marco in Venice. The rectangular canvas paints the square from an unusual perspective, with the marvelous Palazzo Ducale and the lagoon. At the center of the painting, a couple portrayed in typical belle epoque clothes and various characters in the background who walk, chat or feed pigeons. Behind them, the magnificent view of the city, with the column with the lion symbol of Venice and further down the monuments and historic buildings of the city. The scene is full of character and architectural elements and captures the magic light of Venice, the color palette is amazing, the soft pastel shades used are delicate and relaxing. This oil on canvas painting depicts a late 19th century everyday life’s scene in the most poetic way possible and the atmosphere you can breathe admiring the painting is incredibly romantic. Housed in a beautiful molded hand-carved giltwood and gesso frame gilded with gold leaves. Signed low left “Brass” Good condition, thickly painted, bright, stable and saturated color and surface.
