About the Item

Signed lower right, oil on canvas. Unframed 71 cm x 91cm and frame adds about 12 cm all around. George Shaw was born in Glasgow in 1929. In 1947 Shaw abandoned a future in the merchant service when he earned a place at the Wimbledon College of Art, at that time a primary school for painters. Four years at the School provided a good grounding in academic painting from which Shaw launched career. He was a qualified teacher of landscape and portrait painting and gave demonstrations for many societies. Many of his landscapes were painted under the pseudonym of James Shearer. Shaw’s family held long connections to the sea. His grandfather was Captain of a ship that plied between Greenock and the China Seas and which tragically wrecked off the West Coast of Ireland, drowning the Captain. Shaw’s uncle was Chief Engineer on the Cunard Liner, Compania, and there has always been a member of the family at sea. His first love was the sea and sailing craft, and his attitude to marine painting was one of strict realism and accuracy. His knowledge of London’s River from the Nore to Richmond was unsurpassed, and many of his subjects portrayed the Lower reaches of the Thames during its busiest period, up to around 1950. The Lawhill was built in 1892 by W.B. Thomson and Co for Capt. Barrie of Dundee. She was 317 feet in length 45 feet in breadth and 25 feet in depth. her tonnage was 2942 and she was a ‘bald-header’. That is to say she had lower and top masts in one and top gallant masts fidded abaft the top masts which is a reversion to the earliest double topsail rig invented by R.B. Forbes of Boston. The Lawhill was designed as a bulk jute carrier and was a sister ship to the Garthpool. Under Captain Barrie she made no passages of repute although she had a reputation for speed and seaworthiness. She was then sold to the Anglo American Oil Co. and under Captain J.C. Jarvis she figured as an oil sailer until 1911 when she was sold for £5500 to G.Windram and Co. Three years later she was brought by A. Troberg of Mariehamn for £8500. Then in 1919 she became a member of Captain Erikson’s fleet. Under the Finns the Lawhill did some very good sailing such as the following; La Pallice to Port Lincoln in 78 days Bordeaux to Port Lincoln in 74 days and again in 70 days. In 1927 she became one of the grain fleet from Australia. She was seized as a prize of war by the South African Goverment in 1941 and spent the war trading between South Africa and Australia. Sold again in 1948 to a Portuguese owner but never put to sea again and was broken up for scrap in 1959.
