About the Item

1940s French Impressionist Barbizon School oil on panel view of the dunes and beaches at Paris Plage in Northern France. The painting is titled, dated (23rdMay 1940) and signed to the back of the board and carries the red atelier stamp. An atmospheric and enchanting view of the beaches and Dunes at Paris Plage near Le Touquet in Northern France. Guerin has beautifully captured the reflection of the scene in the water to give an intriguing view where we are not sure what is 'real' and what is reflection. He has captured the light and the languid nature of the scene beautifully and has used an impasto technique to give texture to the surface. Guerin was known for achieving a play between light and shade and this is a wonderful example. Le Touquet-Paris-Plage Beach is a commune in the Pas-de-Calais department in Hauts-de-France in northern France. It is one of the iconic areas for the Normandy landings in 1944. It is a long beach, almost six kilometres long, with very fine sand, on which sand yachting activities have developed for a century. Given its western orientation, the setting sun offers magnificent expanses of glowing light for several kilometers. The artist Georges Guerin is noted for his landscapes, seascapes, as well as for his Paris street scenes and views of the Brittany coast.
