About the Item
Gottfried Seelos, antique oil painting, home of Walther von der Vogelweide.
Signed and dated. According to an antique note on the back, the painting comes from a private collection from the Vogelweidhof in Vienna.
The Vogelweidhof - usually called the "Märchenhof" (Fairy tale yard) in the vernacular - was built in 1926/27 according to plans by the architect Leopold Bauer. The courtyard was named after the minstrel Walther von der Vogelweide (1170–1230) and is one of the most idiosyncratic communal residential complexes in the city.
Walther von der Vogelweide (around 1170, place of birth unknown; died around 1230, possibly in Würzburg) is considered the most important German-speaking poet of the Middle Ages. He wrote in Middle High German.
