H. Samuel TeedThames Dockland, Oil Landscape Painting, 1912 London
About the Item
Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated '1912'
Image size: 16 x 12 inches (30.5 x 40.5 cm)
Original gilt frame
This is a scene of the Thames Docks. It is most likely to be on Bankside as this is where the artist lived for five years just before the outbreak of the First World War . The artist Henry Samuel Teed often painted scenes with subjects such as this, using the same ochre-led palette. Here, we can clearly see a Thames barge in the dock, it's copper coloured sails hanging above the wooden hull of the boat as it sits moored. Surrounded by other boat hulls, dockland machinery and suggestions of figures, the scene we are presented with is one of constant industry.
The Artist
Henry Samuel Teed studied in Art Schools in London and Paris, becoming a member of the Royal Society of British Artists and the Art Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery. As a painter he became particularly successful in interpreting the life and beauty of the Thames of London.
He exhibited in the R.A., R.B.A., Whitechapel Art Gallery and the Goupil Gallery between 1905 to 1914.
He sadly died during the First World War at the age of 33, fighting on the Front in a Territorial Battalion of the Royal Berkshire Regiment.
The following is taken from the Pall Mall Gazette of August 2nd 1916, "Every one who cares about the vital art institutions of London will be deeply grieved (says the London correspondent of the Manchester Guardian) to hear that Lieutenant H. S. Teed, the Art Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery, has been killed when fighting with his Regiment in France. " Teed was a whole-soul painter, particularly sensitive to certain aspects of landscape and architecture. It was characteristic of his thoroughness that he lived for five years in a curious old house in the bargee quarter of Bankside, where the finest view of St. Paul's can be seen. From his broad window there he painted the dome and the river in all its changeful aspects through the seasons of the year. Probably no one knew the variety of beauties which flowered in that majestic grouping of river and dome and clouds as the artist who is just gone. "

The Pool of London
By Norman Wilkinson
Located in London, GB
Signed and dated '1902' lower right
Contemporary style hand made frame
Provenance:
Tryon Gallery
Private collection
In this painting we can we Blackfriars Bridge in the background reaching across the River Thames with smoke billowing up into the sky behind. On the far right the unmistakable, and instantly recognisable, silhouette of St Pauls also breaks the sky line of the city. Finished in the early 18th Century, St Pauls has been a noticeable addition to the London cityscape ever since.
This work by Wilkinson depicts 'The Pool' of London, a stretch of the River Thames from London Bridge to below Limehouse. As part of the Tideway of the Thames, the Pool was navigable by tall-masted vessels bringing coastal and oversea goods to the wharves that originally made up the Port of London. In 1909 the Pool came under the jurisdiction of the Port of London Authority. The docks here thrived until the late 1950s, despite suffering from extreme bomb damage during the Second World War.
The tall-masted ships that Wilkinson has depicted here are perfect examples of traditionally rigged sailing craft of the time. They differ from modern sailing vessels in that they did not use newer materials (such as aluminium and steel) and have more complex rigging as a result. The term tall ship later came into widespread use in the mid-20th century with the advent of Tall Ships' races. Here, incredible attention to detail has been applied by Wilkinson in the accurate depiction of the various ships rigging...

Fording the River Landscape British Master Nasmyth 19th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "Nasmyth" leading to one of the whole pleiad of renowned Scottish artists starting with Alexander Nasmyth (1758 -1840). This painting showcases a scene of a landscape with shallow water, where a family is seen wading through a river ford in knee-deep water. The presence of a shepherdess on a high bank, observing the travelers with keen interest, adds a sense of pastoral charm to the composition. One of the focal points of the painting is a picturesque tree that has fallen into the river, adding a touch of drama to the overall scene. The contrast between the lush woodland and bushes on the right side of the foreground and the rolling valley on the left side further enhances the depth and perspective of the painting and superbly illustrates the traditions of the early 19th century British Art...
