The painting is presented and supplied in a sympathetic contemporary frame (which is shown in these photographs). The painted surface has benefitted from cleaning and conservation, which was performed on our instruction, supervision and approval. This vintage painting is now in very good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed with the artist's "fly" motif in the lower left. Helen Layfield Bradley showed early signs of artistic talent but this was put on hold first for the war and then whilst she brought up her family. Indeed, she did not begin to produce paintings until she was 65 and then did so as a way of showing her granddaughter what life was like when she herself was a child. During the following decade she attained international celebrity and recognition as an artist. In 1979 she was awarded the MBE for services to art, but died shortly before she was due to receive the honour from the Queen. Mrs Bradley had three exhibitions at the Mercury Gallery in London and one in Los Angeles and was much loved both sides of the Atlantic. Her paintings typically depict scenes from Edwardian Lancashire with groups of figures, including her family and friends. A familiar figure in many of her paintings was a neighbour, Miss Carter, who wore pink. She gave her name to the first and most famous of four books of her works “And Miss Carter Wore Pink”. Her works are typically signed with a small black fly, as this one is. Like L.S. Lowry, who was an associate and friend, Mrs Bradley’s figurative works are generally described as “naïve”. However, whilst they both painted many industrial backgrounds Mrs Bradley’s scenes showed people who are well dressed, colorful and happy. Her country scenes depicting figures are idyllic and her rarer landscape scenes show a dreamlike quality and stunning use of color and light. This is such a picture and shows a house where she had stayed, near to her home on the edge of the Lake District. The painting was originally painted as a gift to her hosts. © Big Sky Fine Art The landscape scene depicted is of the estuary of the River Leven in the Lake District, Cumbria, as seen from Lancashire. There are cottages nestling under blue fell mountains and a cloudy sky. The technique used here is impasto, where paint is laid on the surface very thickly.

Frame size 25.4 inches x 45.3 inches ( 64.5cm x 115cm ). Available for sale; this original impasto oil painting is by the Cornish artist Nancy Bailey and is dated 1972. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame (which is shown in these photographs). The painted surface has benefitted from a light clean and a new preserving varnish coat has been applied. This vintage painting is in very good condition, commensurate with its age. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right and on the reverse it is titled and signed again. Nancy Bailey was born in 1913 and started her working life at the age of 15. As a teenager she used her father’s camera to take photographs of West Country views, many of which were used to produce postcards, which sold throughout the country. This early talent demonstrated her knowledge and appreciation of light and composition that later enabled her to create the beautiful paintings for which she became internationally renowned. Her family moved frequently throughout the south west, before settling in Ireland where for thirteen years she produced high quality marquetry pictures, which sold all over the world. Nancy only started painting seriously when she returned to Cornwall in her fifties. Her painting career, though started somewhat late, continued over forty years. Nancy worked with a palette knife and never used a brush. This gives her work its distinctive texture and captures the landscape and light. Nancy became acclaimed as one of the leading palette knife artists in the UK. Although Nancy travelled widely, including a safari trip to South Africa with the acclaimed nature artist David Shepherd her best work is arguably of the coasts and rivers of the West Country, which she loved so much. Nancy died in 2012, since when demand for her original works has increased. © Big Sky Fine Art The Minnows Islands are a group of large rocks...
