About the Item

Title: Ibiza Artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) Date: 1950s Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 54 x 73 cm (21.26 x 28.74 in) Support: Unframed canvas Signature: Signed lower right Provenance: Private collection DESCRIPTION This painting by Ignacio Gil Sala presents a costumbrista scene set on the coast of Ibiza. In the foreground, a woman in a blue dress and a child stand on reddish rocks beside traditional fishing baskets, in a composition that opens toward a sunlit Mediterranean bay. The turquoise sea, distant mountains, and vibrant atmosphere convey an intimate and nostalgic view of everyday life on the island. With an impasto and energetic brushstroke, Gil Sala captures the texture of the rocks and the shimmering light on the water, achieving a balance between technical spontaneity and chromatic sensitivity. The scene reveals influences of Post-Impressionism and Mediterranean Luminism, with particular attention to the interaction between the human figure and the landscape. It is a representative work from the artist’s Ibiza period, one of the most celebrated phases of his career. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala was born in Barcelona in 1913. He began his artistic training at the age of nine and later enrolled in the Barcelona School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. In 1930, he was awarded the school's bronze medal, and in 1936 he received a scholarship that allowed him to travel throughout Spain. During the Civil War, with the support of sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he managed to continue his artistic career. A bohemian, traveling painter with a deeply Mediterranean spirit, Gil Sala developed a Post-Impressionist style marked by vibrant color and a free, expressive brushstroke. He was a skilled draftsman and landscape portraitist, best known for his scenes of harbors, seascapes, and urban views. Ibiza held a central place in his work, and his depictions of the island earned him recognition from the Consell Insular de les Illes Balears. He exhibited in Spain, France, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, and Latin America. He died in 2003. SIMILAR ARTISTS Ignacio Gil Sala’s work shares thematic and stylistic affinities with the following painters: Joaquín Sorolla – for his treatment of light and Spanish coastal scenes. Eliseu Meifrèn – for vivid color and coastal views. Hermen Anglada-Camarasa – especially during his Balearic period, for expressive brushwork. José Mongrell – for his costumbrista approach in maritime settings. Santiago Rusiñol – for his poetic gaze on Mediterranean landscapes.
