Spanish, 1913-2003
Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries. Extraordinary draftsman, agile handling pencil and charcoal, Ignacio Gil immortalized landscapes of all Spain, fishing ports of the Mediterranean, different European cities, etc., all expressed through a resounding brushstroke and a studied color. The Insular Council of the Balearic Islands awarded him an award for the numerous times he immortalized the lands, the people and the sea of Ibiza.

Description Luminous Mediterranean scene by Spanish painter Ignacio Gil Sala depicting a mother holding her daughter on the rocky shore of Ibiza. Ibiza Children in White Village Mediterranean Figurative Oil Painting Spain Artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) Title: Traditional Ibizan Scene with Children Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 × 73 cm (23.6 × 28.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right Date: circa 1960s Condition: Very good original condition with visible impasto brushwork Frame: Unframed Provenance: Private collection Spain DESCRIPTION Expressive Mediterranean figurative oil painting depicting children and women in a traditional whitewashed Ibizan village setting by Spanish post-Impressionist painter Ignacio Gil Sala. This composition belongs to the artist’s celebrated Ibiza cycle, widely considered the most recognizable and desirable body of his work. The scene captures the luminous atmosphere of Balearic daily life through confident impasto brushwork and vibrant structural color patches characteristic of mid-century Mediterranean painting. Particularly notable is the treatment of the children’s faces, constructed with dense chromatic strokes that create a strong sense of immediacy and psychological presence. The architecture, rendered in layered whites and violet shadows, reflects the intense island light that defines Gil Sala’s mature Ibiza production. Works featuring traditional Ibizan figures remain among the most collected subjects within the artist’s oeuvre, especially in medium-to-large decorative formats such as the present example. A highly atmospheric and authentic representation of Mediterranean village life. Signed lower right. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913–2003) was a Spanish painter associated with the Mediterranean post-Impressionist tradition of the twentieth century. He trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona under the guidance of Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás and developed a career focused primarily on luminous landscapes and traditional figurative scenes of Ibiza, Mallorca and southern Spain. Following the Spanish Civil War, Ibiza became one of the central subjects of his artistic production. The island’s white architecture, traditional costumes and intense Mediterranean light provided the visual structure for many of his most recognizable compositions. Works from his Ibiza period are considered the most characteristic and desirable within his oeuvre and are especially appreciated for their atmospheric brushwork and chromatic construction. Gil Sala exhibited internationally across Europe and the Americas, and today his Mediterranean scenes remain widely collected as part of the twentieth-century Spanish figurative painting tradition. His work stands within the lineage of painters who explored Mediterranean light through color structure and expressive brushwork alongside Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada-Camarasa and Eliseu Meifrèn. ARTIST CONTEXT / INSPIRATION The luminous Mediterranean palette connects Ignacio Gil Sala with the tradition of Joaquín Sorolla’s coastal figuration and the Balearic chromatic research developed by Hermen Anglada-Camarasa during his Mallorca period. His structured brushwork and atmospheric construction also relate to the post-Impressionist landscape language of Eliseu Meifrèn and the broader European Mediterranean painting tradition collected internationally throughout the twentieth century. Gustave Vidal. French ( b.1895 - d.1966 ). Pêcheurs Sur Les Rochers. Bord De Mer En Côte d'Azur. Oil On Panel. Signed Lower Right. Image size 12.4 inches x 15.6 inches ( 31.5cm x 39.5cm ). Frame size 22.2 inches x 26 inches ( 56.5cm x 66cm ). Available for sale, this original oil painting is by the French artist Gustave Vidal and dates from around 1935. The painting is presented and supplied in its original frame. The original cotton slip has been replaced with a sympathetic contemporary slip that is in keeping with the fresh coastal aesthetic of the painting (which is shown in these photographs). This antique painting is in a good condition. It wants for nothing and is supplied ready to hang and display. The painting is signed lower right. Gustave Vidal was a 20th century French artist, and one of the best Provencal landscapers of his generation. He worked in the Provencal and Basque regions as well as Corsica and the centre of France. He was born in Avignon in 1895, in the Provence region of France, and died in the same town in 1966. Vidal trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon. It is often reported that he studied under Pierre Grivolas, (1823-1906) who was a prominent teacher there who had encouraged plein air painting to capture light and colour directly from nature. However, Grivolas died when Vidal was only 9 or 10, so it is very unlikely that there was a direct teacher/student relationship between them in a formal apprenticeship or atelier setting. Pierre Grivolas had been a director of the École des Beaux-Arts in Avignon until his death in 1906, and found what became known as the Nouvelle école d’Avignon, promoting outdoor practice and modern landscape painting. Grivolas influenced a generation of Provençal painters directly, and his teachings persisted after his death. Vidal therefore studied in the establishment that continued his ethos and would have been influenced by Grivolas’ directorship. Vidal won numerous awards at the Beaux-Arts in Avignon and became a sociétaire (member) of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, an important exhibition venue for French artists of the period. He actually wrote the articles of association for this establishment. As well as exhibiting in Avignon and Paris Vidal also exhibited in Berlin and Brussels. Vidal was primarily a landscape and marine painter. His work is associated with Provencal scenes — including rural landscapes, village streets, harbours, seascapes, and views of the French Riviera and interior France. His technique combined impasto application with both palette knife and brush, reflecting influences from Impressionism and post-Impressionist colourism encountered during his career, especially in Paris. This gives his canvases a textured, lively surface and strong sense of light and atmosphere. His works typically show rich colour and balanced composition, with evocative French light. Nowadays Vidal’s paintings appear regularly in antique galleries, auctions, and online sales in Europe and beyond, though he’s not commonly featured in major public museums or standard art history encyclopaedias. Auction results indicate steady interest among collectors of regional French painting, with prices varying according to size and subject. Although not among the most famous French painters of his generation, Gustave Vidal holds a solid place within early-to-mid-20th-century Provence painting, continuing the regional tradition of light, colour, and landscape that followed Impressionism, and appealing to contemporary collectors of Provençal and southern French art...
