As the fourth son of the painter Henri Martin, Jacques Martin-Ferrières started learning from his father when he was very young. He devoted himself definitively to his great love, painting, once he had completed his studies in chemistry. These studies gave him an insight into the nature of pigments to the point where he was able to mix his own colours.
In addition to studying with and being profoundly influenced by his father, Martin-Ferrières studied with Fréderic Cormon (1854-1924) and Ernest Laurent (1859-1929). He exhibited regularly at the annual Salon des Artistes Français in Paris, where he became an hors-concours member. He won medals at the Salon in 1920 and 1923, and received a travel scholarship in 1924. In addition, Martin-Ferrières was awarded the prestigious Prix National in 1925 for Le Peintre, which was later exhibited at the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh. His important work, Marche d’Assisi, won him both the Gold Medal at the Paris Salon in 1928 and the Institut Français’ Prix Legay-Lebrun - it was acquired by the City of Paris. In 1937, Martin-Ferrières received a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle.
His earliest paintings were indoor scenes and portraits of women depicted against wide landscapes composed of expressive brush-strokes. He was inquisitive about everything: he was a musician and played both the cello and piano well; he loved going to the theatre and to concerts where he sketched face after face with a pencil that was as confident as it was witty. His first exhibitions at the Salon (1920, 1923) were a great success. In 1924 he was awarded a grant to undertake the traditional trip to Italy where he painted Venice, Florence, Rome and Assisi. This trip gave him a taste for travel and henceforth he spent his time criss-crossing Europe: Spain, Italy, Greece, Croatia, Scotland, Holland, Germany, Switzerland. He spent the summer travelling, taking up his paintbrush whenever a scene caught his eye, and the winter in his studio pouring his travel experiences into his paintings. Flowers often caught the attention of his eye for colour, whether in his own garden where they were deliberately planted to nourish future compositions, or in bunches gathered for the studio. In 1928 he undertook to decorate the church of St Christophe de Javel in Paris. The success of this series of paintings brought other commissions from St-Ouen, Romans-sur-Isère, Montauban and the church of St Louis in Marseille.
But the Great War halted his magnificent progress. As a result of injuries sustained during the war, Jacques gradually lost the sight of one eye. He would only resume painting in19 56, but this disability put an end to the large compositions in which he had expressed his vitality, talent and warmth tempered with wit that had been expressed so eloquently. He nevertheless resumed travelling, particularly in the United States where he exhibited regularly. He would continue painting and exhibiting until his death.
In 1956, the artist was made an Officer of the Légion d’Honneur. Major retrospective exhibitions of the artist’s work were held in Paris in 1939 and 1965.

Jacques Martin-Ferrières
A painter remarkable for his highly personal portraits, still-life and landscape views, Jacques Martin-Ferrières was the son of the great Post-Impressionist painter Henri Martin (1860-1943). He studied with his father and with Frederic Cormon (1845-1924). Like his father, Martin-Ferrières became a master at reproducing the scintillating effects of light on canvas. Despite his father’s strong influence, though, Jac developed a technique that was uniquely his own: paint is applied in swift and short brushstrokes of opaque color, at times overlapping and at times separated, revealing a pale ground layer and producing a mosaic-like surface. Martin-Ferrières was awarded many national prizes, including an honorable mention at the Salon of 1920, a silver medal in 1923, the National Prize in 1925, and a Gold Medal and Legay-Lebrun Prize in 1928. He was a regular and respected exhibitor at the annual Salon des Artistes Français. Martin-Ferrieres interrupted his painting career to serve in the French resistance movement during World War II. Although he lost an eye while a prisoner of war, he resumed his art efforts around 1950. His works were shown in Paris in 1965 at an exhibition of landscapes and snow paintings, displaying his use of the thick, impastic surface which gave his paintings depth and a shimmering quality. A retrospective of his work in Paris in 1965 confirmed his respected status. Selected Museum Collections: Boca Raton Museum of Art; Musée Malraux, Le Havre

From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France.
In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948).
D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style.
D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Among other exhibitions were 1912, A Century of French Art ( Centenaire de l'art français), St Petersburg; 1916, Kunstverein, Winterthur; 1918, 1926, Galerie M. Bertheim, Paris; 1930, Contemporary French Art...

Anne Redpath was the daughter of a textiles designer. From 1913 to 1919 she attended the Edinburgh College of Art. She continued her training in Paris, Florence and Siena. When she got married she accompanied her husband, the architect James Beattie Michie, to France in 1920, and stopped painting to look after her family. In 1934 she returned to Edinburgh and took up painting again. Various academies presented her with awards. From 1919 onward she exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy exhibitions, but only showed her work there again regularly from 1935, and then practically every year until she died, each time with several works. She was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1952. She also took part in many group exhibitions but mainly held solo shows. In her early career she produced mostly still-lifes, then later focused on landscape painting. She was active in Paris, the South of France, Italy, Spain, Brittany and Corsica. In her work she was clearly influenced by the inter-war School of Paris, and her painting is tasteful, decorative, and in a tradition somewhere between Maurice Brianchon and André Marchand. She was considered one of the most important Scottish painters of her time.
