Description:
Matulka studied at the National Academy of Design before traveling to the American Southwest, where he became inspired by Native-American and Hispanic cultures. Matulka used this inspiration upon returning home to create representational yet distorted artworks. He has had many solo exhibitions across NYC and has had his work displayed in notable locations such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
In this oil painting study of a landscape, Jan Matulka uses strong, bold, fauvist colors to render a typical New English countryside. The homes, trees, and boulders are added to the composition to create a holistic and romantic view of New England. The viewer is not asked to be concerned with the natural world or the architecture present in the painting as much as the feeling the colors and composition evoke. This feeling is one of peace, domesticity, and pastoralism.

Après Midi en Automne (An Afternoon in Autumn)
Acrylic on canvas
60 x 49cm
"Après Midi en Automne" captures the dynamic interplay of form, color, and movement through Greg Mathias' signature Diachronic Cubism. This 60 x 49 cm acrylic on canvas portrays a vivid autumn afternoon, where angular lines and fragmented shapes converge to reflect the season's energy and introspection.
The composition balances vibrant reds, muted greys, and soft blues, creating a rhythmic visual harmony. The figures and abstracted elements invite the viewer to experience both the vitality of autumn and its fleeting, reflective nature. Mathias skillfully merges cubist tradition with a modern, narrative-driven approach, making this piece a captivating addition to any contemporary art collection.
