Sigurd Schou was a Danish Impressionist painter who focused on loose depictions of pastoral and coastal landscapes. Born and raised in Denmark, he enrolled in the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and went on to develop an Impressionistic stylization of landscapes.
In this oil painting study, Sigurd Schou composes a serene and peaceful seascape with his characteristic impasto techniques. His thick application of paint brings the canvas alive as he clearly articulates the motions of the water, using cool tones to render out a tumultuous sky.
